In normal survival play, you cannot make an individual sugar cane stalk grow faster by changing its soil, water layout, or light. Keep it planted beside water in a loaded chunk and wait. How fast does sugar cane grow naturally?
Sugar cane grows through random block ticks. The Minecraft Wiki reports an average of 16 random block ticks for each added block, with approximate growth times of 18 minutes per block in Java Edition and 54 minutes per block in Bedrock Edition. These are community-wiki mechanic estimates, not guaranteed timers: an individual stalk may take more or less time. The cited page does not state a publication year for these figures.
Natural growth reaches a height of three blocks, according to the Sugar Cane page. The random-tick mechanic means there is no reliable planting pattern that will make a particular stalk hit its next growth check sooner.
What actually helps sugar cane grow?
Plant it beside water
Place sugar cane on a valid block—such as grass, dirt, sand, or mud—with water directly next to the planting block. The water must be side-adjacent; water only above the block or diagonally away does not meet the stated placement condition. Keep the chunk loaded
Sugar cane growth checks happen while its chunk is loaded. Stay within the applicable simulation or loading range while waiting; leaving the area can pause progress. Exact ranges depend on the edition and settings, so there is no single distance to give for every world.
Can bone meal, light, or different soil speed it up?
Bone meal: Bedrock only
The cited Sugar Cane page says bone meal can grow sugar cane to maximum height in Bedrock Edition, while it cannot be used on sugar cane in Java Edition. This is an edition-specific shortcut, so check which edition you are playing before relying on it; the cited source does not establish behavior for every current game version.

Light and soil: no natural-growth boost
Sugar cane can grow in complete darkness, so torches do not accelerate its natural growth. Changing from dirt to sand or rearranging a farm does not increase the per-stalk tick rate in the cited mechanics. The farming tutorial describes light-independent, random-tick growth rather than a lighting or substrate speed setting.

If you play Java Edition, or simply want more cane over time, plant more stalks. A larger farm can produce more total sugar cane because more plants are growing, but it does not make each plant grow faster.

An automatic farm can detect and collect upper cane blocks while leaving the bottom block planted for regrowth. - Nothing is growing: Check that the cane is on a valid block and that the planting block directly touches water on a side.
- Growth seems paused: Stay close enough for the farm’s chunk to remain loaded under your edition and world settings.
