If you catch a species that is new to your island’s museum, you can donate one to Blathers first; when C.J. visits, he may offer more than the usual shop price.
How to catch fish you can sell
You need a fishing pole. Craft one at a DIY workbench if you have its recipe, or buy one with Bells. Fish can appear in rivers, ponds, and the ocean. The in-game Critterpedia on your Nook Phone tracks fish you have caught and gives information about finding more. Play Nintendo’s fishing guide also advises approaching water slowly, since running can scare fish away.
- Stand near a fish’s shadow and cast your line with A.
- Wait for the bobber to go under, then press A to reel in the fish. A fish may nibble up to five times before it takes the bait.
Choose between donating and selling
When you catch a fish species for the first time, decide whether you want it in the museum before selling it. Blathers accepts new fish species for the collection. If completing the museum matters to you, donate the first specimen, then sell later catches. Nintendo’s game overview describes Blathers accepting new fish species.
Sell extra fish at Nook’s Cranny
Take fish you are ready to sell to Nook’s Cranny and sell them for Bells. Nintendo’s beginner guide explicitly recommends selling extra fish there: “Don’t be afraid to sell them at Nook’s Cranny for Bells!” Nintendo’s beginner guide also notes that some visiting characters buy fish or bugs for more than the usual price.

Should you wait for C.J.?
C.J. is the fish-collector visitor, so you can consider holding extra fish for him if he is visiting. Nintendo says some visitors pay a higher price than usual, but its guidance does not specify a multiplier, exact prices, or a visit schedule. There is no sourced fish-by-fish price list here, so choose based on whether you would rather sell now at the shop or wait for the visitor opportunity.
