The fix depends on what you see. For a stale or incorrect avatar image—or a gray X—open Roblox’s Avatar section and select Redraw beneath your avatar. A grey-block character can indicate regional limits on avatar items, while a loading problem inside an experience may come from your browser, connection, or that experience.
Start by identifying where the glitch appears
Check whether the problem affects the avatar image on Roblox’s website, the Avatar page or editor, the mobile app, or a character inside an experience. Then check its scope: does it happen in other browsers or experiences too, or only in one place? Those details help separate a thumbnail problem from a restricted item or a loading failure.

Fix a stale avatar image or gray X
- Open the Avatar section on the Roblox website.
- Select Redraw beneath your avatar image.
- Wait a few minutes for the image to refresh.
- If it still looks wrong, clear your browser’s temporary internet files and try again.
Roblox Support explains that a server hiccup while creating avatar thumbnails can cause the problem. Its guidance says: “It may take a few minutes to complete, but this should fix the issue most of the time.” The article does not give a success-rate percentage. Fix a grey-block avatar
A grey block does not necessarily mean your browser image cache is broken. Roblox says some avatar items may be unavailable in certain regions because of local requirements; in those cases, Roblox may replace the entire avatar with a grey block.

If it is your avatar, try equipping or unequipping an item in the Avatar editor to remove restricted items. Roblox’s documented guidance does not recommend changing VPN settings as a fix. Read Roblox Support’s explanation of avatar item availability.
Repair a broken Avatar page, editor, or Roblox website
- Clear temporary internet files and cookies in the browser you use for Roblox.
- Restart your computer and check the page again.
- Disable browser add-ons or extensions temporarily and reload the page. If that resolves the issue, turn extensions back on one at a time to identify the one associated with it.

Troubleshoot an avatar that will not load inside an experience
First, compare the same avatar in the website preview and in other experiences. If it fails only in one experience, the issue may be specific to that experience, and its creator may need to address it.
Roblox’s connection guidance also identifies wireless connection quality, supported-browser and browser-security settings, browser add-ons, firewall or router configuration, and the experience itself as possible factors. See Roblox Support’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Change an avatar item in the mobile app
Roblox’s mobile instructions describe choosing an item from your inventory and using its wear control to equip or remove it. The Avatar tab is being renamed Me in a regional rollout; if you do not see Me, look for Avatar. Labels can differ by device and rollout. See Roblox Support’s mobile avatar instructions.
