To write scripts for your own Roblox experiences, download the free Roblox Studio app from Roblox. Studio is available for Windows and Mac and includes a Script Editor for writing Luau, Roblox’s scripting language. Add a Script to a project, then use Output and a playtest to check it.
What app do you use to make Roblox scripts?
Use Roblox Studio, Roblox’s official application for creating experiences and their scripts. You do not need to buy a separate script-writing app for the beginner workflow described here.
This guide covers creating scripts in your own Studio project. It does not recommend third-party tools for running unauthorized scripts in someone else’s experience.
How to download and install Roblox Studio
- Go to Roblox’s Studio installation page and download the installer for your computer.
- On Windows, open
RobloxStudio.exe. On Mac, openRobloxStudio.dmg, then follow the installer prompts. - Launch Studio and sign in with your Roblox account.
Roblox lists Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 as minimum operating-system versions, with at least 3 GB of RAM. Its recommended specifications are Windows 11 or macOS 14 or later and 8 GB of RAM. Check the installation page for any current setup details.

How to create your first script
- Open a project in Studio. If Explorer is not visible, open it from Studio’s interface.
- In Explorer, hover over
ServerScriptService, click the plus button, and chooseScript. - Rename the script to describe its purpose. The new script opens in the Script Editor with
print("Hello world!")as starter code. - Open
Outputfrom theWindowmenu, then start a playtest. The message fromprint()appears in Output.
Roblox’s script-creation guide explains that “In Roblox Studio, lines of Luau code are held in scripts.” Output also shows script errors and warnings, which can help you find problems while testing.
What language do Roblox scripts use?
Roblox creators write scripts in Luau. Studio’s Script Editor includes tools such as autocomplete, syntax highlighting, static linting, type checking, and script analysis to help you write and review code.

ServerScriptService is a common place to put a beginner script, but where a script belongs depends on what it should do. Start with the purpose of the script and follow a relevant Roblox Creator Hub tutorial as your project grows.
