What is the current name tag recipe?
The recipe is 1 paper + 1 metal nugget → 1 name tag. Any metal nugget works. Minecraft’s official Tiny Takeover update page and the Java Edition 26.1 and Bedrock Edition 26.10 release notes confirm the recipe.
The official recipe text does not specify a required crafting-grid arrangement, so use the recipe shown in your version’s crafting interface rather than relying on a particular slot layout from a guide.
Which Minecraft versions support crafting name tags?
The recipe is available in the full Tiny Takeover releases: Java Edition 26.1 and Bedrock Edition 26.10. Minecraft announced the drop for both editions on March 24, 2026. Earlier Bedrock preview notes described the feature as experimental; the full-release notes confirm its current availability.

How do you name a mob with a name tag?
- Craft the tag: combine 1 paper and 1 metal nugget.
- Rename it: place the name tag in an anvil and enter the name you want.
- Apply it: use the renamed tag on the mob. The tag is consumed when applied.
Minecraft’s Tiny Takeover community challenge gives the same basic instruction: rename a tag with an anvil before using it on a mob.

That advice predates the 2026 Tiny Takeover update. A reference snapshot dated November 2025 describes name tags as uncraftable, so its acquisition advice is no longer a reliable answer for current Java and Bedrock releases. Bedrock’s current notes also describe changes to where tags appear and how they are traded; older loot or villager-trade details should not be assumed to apply across editions or versions.
