To make a server for an existing Roblox experience, open its Servers section and choose Create Private Server—if the creator has enabled the feature. If you mean a developer-managed reserved server or a brand-new game, those require different steps: reserved servers use code, while new games are created and published in Roblox Studio.
Choose the kind of Roblox server you mean
| Goal | Where to do it | Who controls access | Cost or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play privately in an existing experience | Experience page → Servers | The experience creator must enable private servers; the owner configures access. | Free or priced in Robux by the creator. |
| Offer private servers for your experience | Creator Dashboard → Audience → Access Settings | The experience creator sets availability and price. | Free or priced in Robux; changing the price cancels active subscriptions. |
| Create a game-managed private instance | Experience code using TeleportService | The developer builds the access flow. | Requires scripting, a published experience, and testing in the Roblox app. |
| Start a new game | Roblox Studio, then Creator Dashboard | The experience creator controls publication and access. | Publish the experience; new games are private by default. |
Create a private server for an existing experience
- Open the experience in the Roblox app or on the Roblox website.
- Scroll to its Servers section.
- Select Create Private Server, if the option is available.
- Name the server, review the subscription agreement, and complete the purchase flow. The experience creator sets whether the server is free or costs Robux.
- To manage the server later, return to the experience’s Servers section, open the server menu, and select Configure.
Roblox’s Private / VIP Servers FAQ says an owner can rename a private server, allow up to 50 individual users or the friends list, create a server link, adjust access restrictions, and cancel a subscription.
If you cannot create or join one
- If Create Private Server is missing, the experience creator may not have enabled private servers.
- An error can also occur if you already have free private servers or have reached Roblox’s limit on active free servers.
- Privacy settings and parental controls can affect access. Roblox says users under 13 can join friends’ private servers by default, subject to those settings.
Enable private servers for your own experience
Your experience must be public before you can turn on private servers. In the Creator Dashboard, open the experience, expand Audience, choose Access Settings, enable Allow private servers, select whether the servers require Robux, set a price if applicable, and save.
Private servers may be free or charged monthly in Robux. Changing the price cancels active subscriptions, and Roblox says affected players receive an inbox message.

Create a reserved server with code
A reserved server is not created through the player-facing experience page. It is a developer-created instance managed with Roblox’s TeleportService. The developer can reserve a server and send players to it using TeleportAsync() with TeleportOptions.ReservedServerAccessCode, or use TeleportToPrivateServer() with the access code returned by ReserveServerAsync(). The server starts when that access code is used for the first time.
Roblox’s TeleportService documentation states that this API does not work in Studio playtesting. Publish the experience and test the flow in the Roblox application. Roblox distinguishes reserved servers from private servers; see the DataModel documentation for the server identifier distinction.
