If your Nintendo Switch 2 battery percentage does not match how long the console can keep running, Nintendo’s recommended fix is to check the power adapter, install the latest system update, and enter Recovery Mode to reset the battery-level meter. This is different from a console that will not charge, which needs a separate set of checks.

Fix a battery percentage that does not match actual use

  1. Check the adapter. Nintendo recommends the Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01. The older Switch adapter, HAC-002, can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot charge the console through the Switch 2 dock. See Nintendo’s battery-indicator troubleshooting steps.
  2. Install any available system update. From HOME, open System Settings, scroll to System, select System Update, and complete the update if one is available.
  3. Turn the console fully off. Hold POWER for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Power Off.
  4. Enter Recovery Mode. Hold Volume + and Volume −, press POWER once, and continue holding both volume buttons until the Recovery Mode menu appears. Nintendo says, “Navigating to this menu should reset the battery level meter.”
  5. Restart and check the reading. Hold POWER until the console turns off, then turn it on normally and monitor the battery indicator.
  6. Repeat the process if necessary. If the reading remains incorrect after following these steps multiple times, Nintendo says the console needs service. Use Nintendo Support’s service guidance.

If your Switch 2 will not charge

A meter reset is for an inaccurate reading, not a charging failure. For a console that is not gaining charge, follow Nintendo’s separate Switch 2 charging troubleshooting:

  1. Remove the console from the dock. Unplug the AC adapter from both the power outlet and the console or dock for 30 seconds.
  2. Hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds to force it to shut down.
  3. Connect the adapter directly to the console and try charging again.
  4. If the battery was nearly empty, the screen may stay off even though a charging indicator appears briefly. Leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on.

If it still will not charge, test the other USB-C port, check whether the adapter charges another compatible Nintendo device, confirm the adapter model, and inspect the adapter and ports for damage. Nintendo recommends NGN-01 for best performance. It says an unlicensed adapter rated at 54 W or more can be used, but warns that unlicensed products have not undergone Nintendo’s testing and evaluation and may have compatibility problems. HAC-002 can charge Switch 2 directly, but not through the Switch 2 dock for charging or TV mode. Nintendo advises replacing a damaged adapter; unresolved console or port problems may require service.

Show the battery percentage

If the percentage is simply hidden, you do not need to reset the meter. Nintendo UK describes the displayed percentage as approximate. Press ZL and ZR together on HOME to show it briefly, or, in handheld or tabletop mode, tap the battery icon in the top-right corner. To keep it visible, open System Settings > System > Console Battery (%) and enable the option. You can view estimates for paired controllers from the Controllers menu. See Nintendo UK’s battery-percentage instructions.

What the battery figures do—and do not—tell you

Nintendo gives approximately three hours as the time to fully charge Switch 2 while it is powered off or in sleep mode. It lists battery life at 2 to 6.5 hours when fully charged, depending on the games played. These are general reference figures, not a diagnosis of an individual console; Nintendo’s reviewed support pages do not state a publication year for them.
