For a basic Roblox morph that changes a player’s current character appearance, update a HumanoidDescription and apply it to the character’s Humanoid. If you want the player to become a wholly different custom model, build or import a character model instead. The first approach is simpler and is the focus of the walkthrough below.
Choose the type of morph you want

Make an appearance morph with HumanoidDescription
1. Check the character rig
In Roblox Studio, use the Rig Generator to insert an R6 or R15 rig, or check which rig your game already uses. The Rig Generator guide explains both choices. R6 does not use the scale properties described by HumanoidDescription. Layerable clothing and accessories require R15.
2. Decide which appearance fields to change
A HumanoidDescription can represent body parts, body colors, scale, accessories, classic clothing, and animations. Change only the fields the morph needs so the other parts of the player’s current appearance remain intact.

3. Retrieve, edit, and apply the current description
For an existing player character, start with Humanoid:GetAppliedDescription() so you modify its current appearance rather than replacing it wholesale. The current Humanoid API documents Humanoid:ApplyDescriptionAsync() for applying the result. The appearance guide also contains an older ApplyDescription() example, but the API reference marks that method deprecated; use the async method in new scripts.

endThis is the appearance-change portion, not a complete morph-pad system. A pad also needs game logic to identify the player, choose a morph, and decide when to apply it; Roblox’s appearance API documentation does not provide a complete trigger implementation.

4. Test the changed look on the target rig
Run the experience in Studio and check the appearance using the rig your game actually uses. In particular, test scale changes on R15 and avoid expecting R6 to respond to the description’s scale properties. Confirm that clothing and accessories suit the selected rig.
Keep appearance changes on one path
Roblox warns that changing character assets directly at the same time as changing them through HumanoidDescription can lead to undefined behavior. For a morph, make the appearance edits through one mechanism rather than interleaving direct asset changes with description updates.

Build a full custom-character morph when appearance edits are not enough
If the target has a wholly different body or geometry, use a separate character model rather than trying to express the change as an outfit. Roblox describes basic NPCs as models with geometry and a Humanoid. More elaborate custom avatar bodies can require external modeling, rigging, skinning, importing, and validation in Studio. The Rig Generator is a useful starting point for standard R6 or R15 character rigs; custom bodies require additional setup.

Choose the practical route
- Use a
HumanoidDescriptionwhen the character keeps its existing rig and only its appearance changes. - Use R15 if the morph depends on scale properties or layerable clothing and accessories.
- Use a separate model when the transformation needs a different body shape or geometry.
- Keep custom modeling and rigging for cases that need them; they are not required for a basic appearance morph.
