Which FPS limit should you use?
Bethesda recommends a 60 FPS cap for Fallout 4 on PC. Its support guidance ties the cap to your monitor’s refresh rate and the iPresentInterval value. On Xbox Series S|X and PS5, the game offers 30, 40, or 60 FPS targets through its Display Settings.

Limit FPS on PC with Fallout 4’s INI setting
Bethesda identifies this default Windows configuration file: C:Users<username>Documentsmy gamesFallout4Fallout4.ini. The examples below come from Bethesda’s support guidance; other versions, launchers, Windows setups, or modded installations may differ.

Do not use iPresentInterval=0 if you want a cap: Bethesda says zero uncaps the frame rate and can cause speed-related problems. Its support instructions for players getting stuck in furniture or terminals also recommend retaining the default 60 FPS cap. Use a graphics-driver cap on PC
A driver-level maximum is an alternative when you want an application-specific cap or are troubleshooting a high-refresh display. Bethesda’s article for blank screens on 300 Hz displays describes setting a per-game maximum frame rate in NVIDIA Control Panel or limiting frame rate through AMD Radeon Software. The exact menu labels can vary by driver version, so use the current controls in your installed software.
Bethesda warns that “Playing Fallout 4 with a framerate higher than 60 FPS can lead to display and gameplay issues.” Its 300 Hz troubleshooting article also advises checking iPresentInterval=1 in Fallout4Prefs.ini if blank-screen trouble persists after applying its guidance. Set the target on Xbox Series S|X or PS5
On Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5, use the in-game Display Settings and select Frame Rate Target. Bethesda’s Next Gen Update 2 notes list 30, 40, and 60 FPS. The 40 FPS option requires a display that supports 120 Hz. These are console settings, not a PC menu; see the official update notes.

If Fallout 4 still runs too fast or has display problems
