How you install Minecraft add-ons depends on the edition: Bedrock add-ons are activated as resource or behavior packs for a world, while Java Edition uses third-party mods that must match the game version and mod loader. Minecraft Education has its own documented file-import steps. Check your edition before following a guide.
Minecraft’s edition guide distinguishes Java Edition, available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, from Bedrock, available across Windows, mobile, and consoles.
Install a Bedrock add-on in a new world
Bedrock add-ons work through a world’s Resource Packs or Behavior Packs settings. After the add-on is available in your game, activate it while creating the world:
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- On the Worlds tab, select Create New World.
- Choose Marketplace content or create a world.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Under Available, select Activate for the add-on.
- Select Create.
Minecraft’s add-on instructions cover this activation flow.

Activate an add-on in an existing Bedrock world
- Select Play, then select the pencil or edit control beside the world.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Under Available, select Activate for the add-on.
- Select Play to launch the world.
Activate the pack in the specific world where you want it to apply; acquiring or downloading content alone does not enable it for every world.
Find and use Marketplace add-ons
- In Bedrock, open Marketplace and select My Library.
- Look under Owned or Marketplace Pass for the content.
- Choose the option shown for that item: Download, Create this World, or Equip.
- If you want an add-on to affect a particular world, open that world’s settings and activate it under Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
The available action depends on the content type. If something you acquired is missing, verify you are signed in with the account used to get it and check My Library. See Minecraft’s Marketplace add-on instructions.

Enable add-ons on a Bedrock Realm
- Open Play > Realms.
- Choose the Realm or world slot you want to change, then open its world settings.
- Under Add-Ons, open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Select the pack, activate it, and confirm.
- Wait for the updated world to upload before playing.
Bedrock players who join a Realm automatically download and apply the add-ons active on that Realm, according to Minecraft’s Realm add-on guidance.
Install mods in Java Edition
Java mods are third-party software, not Bedrock add-ons. Minecraft says mods are not created, reviewed, or endorsed by Mojang Studios; they can cause the game to malfunction or become unplayable, and Minecraft Support cannot assist with problems arising from mod use. Read Minecraft’s Java Edition support guidance and use independently developed downloads with care.

For a Fabric setup
- Install Fabric by following its instructions for your operating system and Minecraft release: Fabric installation instructions.
- Choose mod files built for Java Edition and the exact Minecraft version you play. Confirm each mod supports Fabric; a mod for another loader may not work.
- Check the mod’s requirements. Most Fabric mods also need Fabric API, and individual mods may have other dependencies.
- Place the downloaded mod files in Minecraft’s
modsfolder. - Open the Minecraft Launcher and start the Fabric profile.
Version, loader, and dependency mismatches are common reasons a mod will not load. Follow the mod’s own instructions as well as Fabric’s; a mod made for one Minecraft version may fail on another. These steps apply to Fabric, not every Java mod loader.
Import files in Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education documents a separate import process for .mcpack, .mcaddon, and .mcworld files. These directions are for Education and should not be treated as universal instructions for Bedrock on consoles or mobile.

- If the add-on includes both a resource pack and a behavior pack, activate each separately.
See the Minecraft Education resource-pack guide for its documented steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot an add-on that is missing or not working
- First check the edition. Java mods, Bedrock add-ons, and Education imports do not share one installation process.
- For Java: verify the mod’s edition, Minecraft version, loader, and required dependencies, then launch the matching loader profile.
- For Bedrock: check that the pack appears in the game’s list and activate it under the correct Resource Packs or Behavior Packs settings for that world.
- For Marketplace content: check the purchasing account and Marketplace > My Library.
- For a Realm: wait for the edited world to finish uploading before testing it.
- For Java mod problems: Minecraft Support does not provide assistance for issues resulting from mod use.
The reviewed official instructions do not establish one third-party .mcpack or .mcaddon import procedure that works across all Bedrock devices. Use instructions specific to your platform rather than assuming Education’s file-opening steps apply.
