Some Ubisoft games can be played offline, but there is no universal setting that makes every Ubisoft title work without internet. On PC, Ubisoft Connect PC launches in Offline mode when it has no connection; whether a game starts and what remains available depend on the specific title and how you access it. Install required updates and complete any necessary online checks before disconnecting. Ubisoft+ is different: the cited US subscription terms require a persistent internet connection, including for offline play.
What determines whether a Ubisoft game works offline?
Offline play depends on several separate requirements: the game’s own connection rules, its launcher or platform, whether it has been updated, and whether your access comes from a purchase or a subscription. Ubisoft’s Terms of Use version 5.0 (English Canada) warn that some games or features may require a permanent internet connection. That is not a claim that every Ubisoft game does. Check the current requirements for the exact game and platform before relying on offline access: Ubisoft Terms of Use.
- Offline single-player content: May remain playable if the game supports offline startup and any required checks have already been completed.
- Online features: Multiplayer and other connected functions will not be available without a connection. For example, Ubisoft says Anno 1800 can start offline through Ubisoft Connect PC, but its online features are unavailable: Playing Anno 1800 in offline mode.
- Updates and first-start requirements: A game may need a download or online check before offline play is possible. Offline mode does not install updates automatically.
How to play Ubisoft games offline on PC
Ubisoft documents automatic Offline mode for Ubisoft Connect PC: “Please note that Ubisoft Connect PC will launch in Offline mode if you have no internet connection.” The behavior is specific to the PC client; Ubisoft’s cited guidance does not establish a universal manual toggle sequence for a launcher that is already running. See Ubisoft Connect PC overlay troubleshooting.
- While connected, install the game and its available updates. Ubisoft says updates will not install automatically in Offline mode. If the game has a required patch, download it first.
- Start the game online at least once if it requires an initial check. This is a precaution, not a guarantee that every title will cache authorization or work offline later. Ubisoft’s Anno 1800 instructions, for instance, say to log in while online before using the game offline.
- Disconnect from the internet. Ubisoft Connect PC will launch in Offline mode when no internet connection is available.
- Open the installed game from your library and test the content you need. Expect connected features to be unavailable, and do not assume that every game supports offline startup.
Ubisoft also notes that Offline mode can affect game features and functionality in its Ubisoft Connect PC login troubleshooting guidance.

Purchased games, Ubisoft+, and access checks
Individually purchased games
A purchase does not by itself establish that a game can start offline: the title may still require a connection, launcher, account check, or patch. Ubisoft says activated games and in-game content are linked to the Ubisoft account used to activate or redeem them; see Game not appearing in Ubisoft Connect PC. Confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the game while online, then check the title’s current requirements.
Ubisoft+ subscriptions
The English US Ubisoft+ Subscription Terms 2.0 state that a persistent internet connection is required “for both online and offline play.” This is a subscription-access requirement, not evidence that every individually purchased Ubisoft game needs a persistent connection. Subscribers outside the United States should consult the terms that apply to their region. Ubisoft+ Subscription Terms.

What about PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo consoles?
The PC launcher behavior described above should not be assumed to apply to consoles. The cited Ubisoft guidance does not establish universal offline steps or compatibility for an unspecified console game. Check the console platform’s offline settings and the particular game’s official requirements. Disconnecting a console from its network does not necessarily satisfy a game’s Ubisoft account, activation, patch, or connection requirements.

Requirements vary by title and can change, so use the game’s current store listing or official support page rather than generalizing from another Ubisoft game. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s PC store listing says Offline mode is available after downloading its mandatory day-one patch; this is a title-specific example, not a rule for other games or platforms. The listing also identifies account and internet requirements: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on the Ubisoft Store.

Ubisoft’s service-retirement notices also distinguish offline content from features that depend on retired servers. For covered legacy games, Ubisoft says offline features remain available while some online multiplayer, news, statistics, unlockables, or rewards are affected. The result depends on the named title and platform; consult the relevant entry in Ubisoft’s legacy online-services notice rather than treating a shutdown as proof that all play has ended.

If the game will not start offline
- Reconnect and check for updates. A pending patch or required download may be blocking startup.
- Verify account access. On PC, confirm Ubisoft Connect is using the account that activated or redeemed the game.
- Check Ubisoft service status and the title’s support page. Ubisoft recommends checking for degraded services when troubleshooting login problems. An outage alone does not prove a game is permanently online-only.
- Check the game’s specific connection requirements. Offline mode may disable features or fail to support startup for a particular title; the PC client’s Offline mode is not a compatibility guarantee.
