Find the first switch in any trash can, then check a can adjacent to it for the second. If that second can is wrong, both switches reset and you must start over. The locations vary, so there is no fixed pair of cans to memorize.

How to open Vermilion Gym

  1. Get inside. If the Gym entrance is blocked by a tree, obtain HM01 Cut, teach it to a compatible Pokémon, and use Cut on the tree.
  2. Search for the first switch. Examine the trash cans until the game reveals it. Its location is randomized.
  3. Check an adjacent can. Once you find the first switch, inspect a can next to that one for the second. The available guide sources establish adjacency, but not a guaranteed direction or coordinate.
  4. Restart if the second can is wrong. Both switches reset, so search the cans again for the first switch before trying an adjacent can.

Finding both switches in order opens the electronic barrier and lets you challenge Lt. Surge. Bulbapedia’s FireRed and LeafGreen walkthrough, Serebii’s Gym Leaders guide, and Joking Joystick’s walkthrough describe the switch sequence and reset behavior.

What to know before battling Lt. Surge

In FireRed, Surge’s team is Voltorb at level 21, Pikachu at level 18, and Raichu at level 24, according to Bulbapedia’s walkthrough. Ground-type Pokémon are unaffected by Electric-type moves, and Ground moves such as Dig can help. Pikachu and Raichu have Thunder Wave, so bringing a paralysis cure is practical preparation.

Defeating Surge earns the Thunder Badge and TM34 Shock Wave. The badge also allows you to use Fly outside battle, according to Serebii.
