From there, choose local communication to trade with a nearby player or online communication to connect over the internet. Online trading requires an installed game update and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and online play is not available in every country.
Where to start a trade in BDSP
The Pokémon Company’s Trainers Guide directs players to the second floor of any Pokémon Center: “When you’re ready to trade, visit the second floor of any Pokémon Center to get started.” The game’s Union Room supports both local and online communication.
The official material identifies the starting location and communication options, but does not give a complete button-by-button sequence or specify the story milestone that unlocks trading. If the trading option is not available, the cited official guide does not establish which progression step is missing.
Choose local or online communication
| Option | Use it when | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Local communication | The other player is nearby. | Both players need the same game software version, according to Nintendo’s update information. |
| Online communication | You want to connect with a player over the internet. | Requires internet access, the game update, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says online play is not available in all countries; see its BDSP tips. |
For a nearby player
Use the Union Room’s local communication option when trading with someone physically nearby. Check that both copies of the game are running the same software version before trying to connect.

Why a traded Pokémon may not obey
A traded Pokémon can disobey if your Gym Badge progress is too low for its level. The Pokémon Company’s guide says that at the beginning you can effectively use traded Pokémon up to level 10; the level limit rises by 20 for every two Badges earned, and all Pokémon obey without question after all eight Badges. Traded Pokémon also gain experience faster, according to the same guide.
Not every Pokémon can be traded
Nintendo says certain Pokémon obtained through unintended methods or illicit modification cannot be used in Link Trades or Link Battles. The restriction applies to those Pokémon; it does not mean that ordinary Pokémon are generally blocked from trading. Nintendo describes this limitation in its software update notes.
Pokémon HOME trades are a separate process
Pokémon HOME trading is not the same as starting a Link Trade in BDSP. Nintendo says HOME trades take place in the mobile app. Moving Pokémon between HOME and BDSP uses the Nintendo Switch console version of HOME, and a Pokémon currently in your party cannot be transferred through that flow. See Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME FAQ and transfer instructions.
