While mounted in Red Dead Redemption 2, tap R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox to slow or stop your horse. On the default PC Story Mode keyboard-and-mouse layout, use Left Ctrl. If an input does not work, check the on-screen prompt and your current control mapping.

How to stop on a controller
- While riding, tap R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox to slow the horse. Tap the same control to bring it to a stop.
- Do not confuse an ordinary tap with a double tap: the console guide lists double-tapping R1/RB while riding with companions as a formation action, not the standard slow-down input. Console controls guide.
How to stop on PC
On the default keyboard-and-mouse Story Mode layout, press Left Ctrl for the combined horse slow/stop control. The community-maintained mapping does not document a separate emergency-stop shortcut. PC key mapping.

If the control does not work
- Make sure your character is mounted, then check the on-screen control prompt.
- On PC, inspect Pause > Settings > Controls > Keyboard & Mouse > Key Mapping. The Left Ctrl binding applies to the default Story Mode mapping and may have been changed. PC key mapping.
- On console, verify the currently mapped controls if the listed button has been changed.
Does Tap Assist change the horse stop control?
Rockstar Support describes Tap Assist as an accessibility setting that makes repeated-tap action sequences easier or can turn tapping into holding. Its settings are at Pause Menu > Settings > Controls > Accessibility, with options Off, 2x, 3x, 4x, or Hold; the support article was last updated May 19, 2023. Rockstar does not say that Tap Assist changes the horse slow/stop input, so it is not a confirmed fix for a nonworking horse control. Rockstar Support: Tap Assist.
