To waterlog a compatible block in Minecraft, hold a water bucket, aim at the block, and use the normal place/use action. The exact control depends on your device and bindings. Waterlogging works only with supported blocks, and behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock Edition.
How do I waterlog a block in Minecraft?
- Hold a water bucket.
- Aim at the compatible block you want to waterlog.
- Use your device’s normal place/use action. If you are unsure of the binding, check Minecraft’s controls guide or the in-game control settings; controls can be customized.
If the block supports waterlogging in your edition and version, water occupies the same block position while the block remains there. If it does not, the interaction may fail or water may be placed as an ordinary fluid instead.
Does waterlogging work in Java and Bedrock?
Yes, but the games represent and handle it differently. In Java Edition, supported blocks use a waterlogged block state. In Bedrock Edition, a block can share its position with a secondary water layer. These are general edition distinctions, not guarantees that every partial block waterlogs in every current release. Check the particular block in your edition and version. See the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki waterlogging reference for an overview.
Why won’t this block waterlog?
- It may not be compatible. Waterlogging is block-specific; not every partial block supports it. Confirm compatibility for the block, edition, and version you are playing.
- You may be using the wrong interaction binding. The use action varies by device and can be changed in settings. Consult the official Minecraft controls guide.
- The water may be behaving differently than expected. A waterlogged block can contain water without allowing it to flow through. In Bedrock, some such blocks let water flow through as if the block were air, while others make it flow around them. The Bedrock Wiki’s block co-location reference explains this distinction.
Waterlogging versus flooding an area
Waterlogging means water and a compatible block occupy the same position. Flooding an area is a separate editing task. The Bedrock Editor’s Flood tool fills areas with water or lava and accounts for terrain boundaries and waterlogging; Microsoft lists a 120,000-block limit unless the editor override is enabled. You do not need this tool for the ordinary water-bucket interaction. Details are in Microsoft’s Bedrock Editor Flood documentation, updated May 26, 2026.

Waterlogging custom blocks in Bedrock
For custom Bedrock content, Mojang’s bedrock-samples block documentation describes the minecraft:liquid_detection component. Its can_contain_liquid setting controls whether the block can contain liquid, while on_liquid_touches describes how it reacts when flowing water reaches it. This is creator configuration, not a setting ordinary players need to change to waterlog a supported in-game block.
