Press F3+G in Minecraft: Java Edition to toggle the chunk-border overlay. Press the same combination again to turn it off. If the shortcut does not work, check your function-key settings and the version-specific troubleshooting steps below.
Turn on chunk borders with F3+G
- Open a world in Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Press F3 and G together. The chunk-border overlay should appear.
- Press F3+G again when you want to hide the borders.
This is a debug feature, not a setting in the usual game options. Mojang’s issue tracker documents F3+G as the chunk-border toggle: MC-123010.

If F3+G does not show the borders
Check whether your keyboard intercepts F3
Some keyboards use the function row for hardware controls, so F3 may not reach the game as a function key. Try holding Fn as well—typically Fn+F3+G. The exact key combination depends on the keyboard and its function-key mode; Mojang’s issue tracker documents inconsistent behavior across some keyboard layouts: MC-121706.
Check reduced debug information
In affected versions, the reducedDebugInfo restriction can prevent chunk borders from rendering even though chat reports that the toggle changed. Mojang’s report documents this version-specific behavior: MC-123010. If you are playing on a server or in a world with restricted debug information, the overlay may therefore fail to appear. The report does not establish that this affects every current version or world.
