The button for opening chat depends on your platform, so use the control shown for your device rather than relying on a single universal shortcut. Minecraft’s accessibility guide documents the chat-settings gear and mute toggle.
Turn off all chat in Bedrock
- Open the in-game chat using the control for your platform.
- Select the gear icon beside the chat input to open chat settings.
- Turn on Mute All Chat.
This hides chat for you; it does not, by itself, prevent other players from communicating with your account. If you cannot find the gear or chat control, check the instructions for your platform and game version rather than trying a button sequence from another device.

Choose the right control for your goal
| Control | What it changes | Can you keep playing online? |
|---|---|---|
| Mute All Chat | Hides chat for you. | Yes; this is a chat-visibility setting. |
| Mute one player | Hides that player’s messages from your in-game chat and servers. | Yes. Minecraft’s server safety guide says muted players’ messages no longer appear in game chat or on servers. |
| Block one player | Stops that player from contacting you through Minecraft or the Xbox network and from joining your Realm. | Yes, though the blocked player cannot join your Realm. |
| Turn off multiplayer | Prevents multiplayer interaction rather than merely hiding messages. | No multiplayer. Minecraft’s server guide describes turning multiplayer off in settings. |
Restrict chat for a child’s account
For a child account, use a parent account’s Xbox Family settings or the Xbox privacy settings page. Minecraft’s parental-controls guide describes the setting Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites, with choices of Everyone, Friends, or Block. Choose the level that fits your needs; this changes account communication permissions, not just whether chat is visible on the child’s screen. Microsoft’s Xbox privacy settings are managed by the parent for a child account.
Chat muting is not profanity filtering
Mute All Chat hides messages; it is not the profanity filter. Minecraft says the profanity filter is active on Realms, partner servers, and other multiplayer experiences. For signed-in child accounts, the Filter Profanity control is on by default and cannot be turned off. See Minecraft’s profanity-filter guidance.

If chat still appears on a server
A user comment on Minecraft’s feedback site reports inconsistent behavior on some mixed Java/Bedrock servers. That is an individual report, not evidence that the setting generally fails. If the toggle does not seem to take effect, check whether the messages are coming from a server-specific feature and consult that server’s guidance; the available information does not establish a universal fix.
