In current Java Edition, editing options.txt to push gamma beyond the in-game limit is outdated advice: Mojang lists that behavior as fixed in Java 1.19.
Raise Minecraft’s Brightness setting
- Open Settings from the game menu.
- Find Brightness. Depending on your edition, version, and device, it may appear among the video or visual settings.
- Move the slider toward the brighter end, then return to the game to check the result.
Java and Bedrock have different interfaces, so menu labels and navigation can vary. Minecraft’s official accessibility overview covers Bedrock visual settings; a community-maintained menu guide identifies a brightness slider. The available information does not establish one exact path or slider maximum for every platform.

What to do in Java Edition
Use the in-game Brightness control for current Java gameplay. Older guides may tell you to change gamma in .minecraft/options.txt to a value above the slider limit. Mojang’s Java 1.19 release notes list changing brightness or gamma above the in-game limit through options.txt as a fixed bug. The linked Mojang bug tracker entry records the fix version as 22w12a and the resolution date as 2022-04-01. That historical file edit should not be treated as a reliable method for current versions.
What to do in Bedrock Edition
Raise the in-game Brightness slider. The precise menu location can differ by device and version, and the sources do not establish a universal navigation path. If you are adjusting Vibrant Visuals settings while already in a world, Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals help page says to save and exit, then open Settings from the launch screen. That instruction concerns Vibrant Visuals and should not be assumed necessary for every brightness adjustment.
