For live use, the experience must support Camera, camera access must be allowed, and your equipped head must support facial animation. Studio capture is a separate creator workflow.

Use face tracking while playing Roblox
- Find an experience with Camera support. Open the experience details and check its Communication field. Camera means camera-based avatar animation is supported; Microphone alone indicates voice chat support, not face tracking. If both appear, the experience supports both.
- Allow Roblox to use your camera. When your device or operating system asks for permission, grant it. If you previously denied access, change the permission in the device’s application settings.
- Turn on the camera in the experience. Camera use is off by default and is controlled separately from the microphone. Roblox uses camera input to match your avatar’s facial expressions and head movements. You can turn the camera off from the Roblox menu.
- Equip a compatible head. In Customize or Marketplace, look for the winking-face icon on the head thumbnail. Not every head supports facial animation.
- Select the right camera if you have more than one. Open the in-experience Roblox menu, choose Settings, scroll to Video Camera, and select the device you want. Self View is optional if you want to see the animated avatar.
A microphone is not required for camera-driven facial movement. Microphone-only input can lip-sync your avatar’s mouth to speech; camera input can mirror facial expressions and head movement. Check voice chat eligibility separately if you want to use that feature.
Record facial animation in Roblox Studio
Studio’s Animation Capture – Face records a clip and creates keyframes you can adjust and reuse. Roblox recommends good lighting, sitting close enough to the camera, and keeping your face centered in frame so the camera can distinguish it from the surroundings. The documented capture limit is up to 60 seconds.

- In Roblox Studio, enable the beta feature at File > Beta Features > Face Capture.
- Open Avatar > Clip Editor.
- Select the rig in the viewport or Explorer, create an animation, and choose Face Capture in the track list.
- Accept the consent and camera-access prompts. Choose a camera if needed.
- Start recording with the control in the 3D viewport, then stop the recording to generate keyframes in the timeline.
- Fine-tune the keyframes, then save or export the animation.
This workflow is for creators working with a rig, not a setting that makes your live player avatar follow your face. The resulting keyframes can be edited and retained like other animation keyframes.
Check head compatibility
For players
Use a head marked for facial animation with Roblox’s winking-face icon in Customize or Marketplace. If the equipped head lacks support, live tracking will not animate it as expected.

For creators
Roblox specifies at least 17 FACS poses for avatar chat support when creating heads. The required pose set covers movements such as eye closure, looking down, jaw drop, puckering, cheek and brow movement, and lip-corner and lower-lip poses. Additional supported poses can improve expressiveness and fidelity. This is a head-authoring requirement, not a player setup checklist; see the Creator Hub face-capture requirements.

Roblox’s Facial Animation Privacy Notice says facial video analysis happens entirely on your device and is not sent to Roblox or third parties. While live camera animation is enabled, an experience developer may read abstract numeric facial-animation values if the experience uses them as a game input; the developer cannot access the camera video. Live-use keyframes are deleted after use. By contrast, Studio Animation Capture keyframes can be kept like other animation keyframes.

You can disable live camera animation through Privacy Settings or turn the camera off inside an experience.

Troubleshoot face tracking
- No camera option in the experience: Check the Communication field on its details page. Camera support is configured by the experience developer; microphone support by itself is not enough.
- Roblox cannot use the camera: Allow camera access in the device or operating-system application settings, especially if permission was denied earlier.
- Your avatar does not mirror your face: Check that the equipped head has the winking-face compatibility icon, and that the camera is turned on in the experience.
- Android device is unsupported: Roblox’s support page says camera animation is unavailable on Android devices with 3 GB RAM or less. It names Galaxy Tab A7/A8, Xiaomi Redmi 9A, and Fire HD 8/10 as examples, and advises using a device with more than 3 GB RAM. This is the limitation stated on that support page, not a complete compatibility list.
- Studio does not create keyframes or tracking is poor: Confirm Face Capture is enabled under Beta Features, accept the camera prompt, select the intended camera, improve the lighting, and keep your face centered in frame.
