They are not ordinary pocket items, so you will not use them by selecting a pattern from your inventory.
How to unlock Sable’s patterns
- Visit the Able Sisters shop and speak with Sable while she is working there.
- Keep talking to her on successive visits. As your friendship develops, she will eventually share hand-sewn patterns. Nintendo Life guide author Austin Voigt estimates this takes about a week; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed timer. Nintendo Life’s Sable guide explains the pattern unlock.
If you do not have the shop yet, Nintendo Life’s guide says to first open Nook’s Cranny, spend at least 5,000 Bells on Mabel’s goods during her visits, then complete the shop setup. It reports that Able Sisters opens two days after you place the shop plot; these are guide-reported steps and timing. See Nintendo Life’s Able Sisters unlock guide. Nintendo’s beginner guide also advises talking to Sable while she works in the shop.

How to use the patterns on furniture
- Choose a furniture item that supports customization.
- Open the game’s customization option for that item.
- In its customization choices, select the pattern option and choose one of Sable’s patterns.
If you do not see a pattern choice, that item may not support fabric patterns. Try another customizable piece: pattern availability depends on the options for that particular item, and not every piece of furniture accepts them. Nintendo Life describes patterns as usable for clothing, wallpaper, and details on certain furniture and other items, but the exact choices vary by item.
Where did the fabric Sable gave me go?
Sable’s patterns are a customization resource, not a normal object you carry in your pockets. Look for them inside the customization choices of an eligible item rather than searching your inventory for a fabric gift.

Sable’s patterns and the Custom Designs Portal are different

You do not need the portal to use Sable’s patterns. The two systems provide different kinds of design access.

Nintendo Life’s guide reports 11 sets of 20 patterns: Polka-dot print, Striped, Checkered 1, Checkered 2, Traditional 1, Traditional 2, Retro, Natural, Playful, Cool, and Variety. This count and set list are reported by that guide, rather than presented here as a Nintendo-published specification.
