KiGB is a portable emulator project for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy, with documented support for battery saves, save states, compressed game files, cheats, joystick or joypad input, and two-player link play over TCP/IP. Its original project page lists version 2.05, released June 11, 2008, for Windows, Linux, and MS-DOS; a separate Homebrew Formulae entry lists a macOS cask at version 2.0.9. Those are distinct package records, not evidence that every port is currently maintained or compatible with modern systems.
What systems does KiGB emulate?
KiGB’s published feature list names three targets: the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy, including SGB and SGB2. The project also lists support for several mapper families and Game Boy Printer emulation. These are features documented by the project, rather than results of a current independent test.
The project describes KiGB as portable and lists Windows, Linux, and MS-DOS on its home page. That page identifies version 2.05 as the latest release, dated June 11, 2008. Separately, Homebrew Formulae lists a macOS KiGB cask at version 2.0.9 with a KiGB.app artifact. Because these are different records and versions, check the package page and your operating-system requirements before relying on a particular download: KiGB home/download page and Homebrew Formulae cask listing.
What features does KiGB document?
- Saving: battery-backed game saves, real-time clock support, and save states.
- Game files: support for zipped and gzipped files.
- Controls: joystick and joypad input. A compatible computer gamepad may be convenient, but no particular controller model is established as tested or endorsed.
- Link play: the project says its Game Link Cable feature allows two players to play over a TCP/IP network. This is a documented feature claim; setup details and present-day reliability are not established here.
- Extras: Game Genie and GameShark cheats, screen captures, per-game configuration, adjustable speed, and Game Boy Printer support.
- Super Game Boy: SGB and SGB2 support is listed by the project.
KiGB’s feature page also says the Game Boy boot ROM is supported but not included. See the KiGB feature list for the project’s complete published feature information.

How strong is the compatibility evidence?
On its 2008 release page, the KiGB project says its developers tested more than 6,000 games and demos from the GoodGBX V2.02 ROM set while working on compatibility and accuracy. This is a historical, project-reported figure—not a current independent benchmark or a guarantee that every title works on every build.
The project’s compatibility page describes tests and comparisons involving KiGB and four other emulators. It says that, unless a test notes otherwise, games were checked on a real Game Boy Color or classic Game Boy. That methodology gives useful historical context, but the page is not a comprehensive modern validation of current operating systems, packages, or game libraries. KiGB’s compatibility claim should therefore be read as evidence of the project’s own testing at the time, not as a present-day ranking. See the KiGB compatibility page and the release page.

Should you choose KiGB or another emulator?
KiGB may suit someone who specifically wants its documented Super Game Boy support, save-state and battery-save options, or TCP/IP link feature and can obtain a compatible build. Its listed original release is old, so package availability and operating-system compatibility matter as much as the feature list.
Gearboy and SameBoy are alternatives worth checking against your platform and priorities. Their own documentation describes the following capabilities; these descriptions do not establish a head-to-head performance or accuracy comparison with KiGB.
