They are a defensive ambush and route-denial tool, not a reliable way to stop a vehicle already speeding past. The key is to choose a route that matters to the enemy but is not needed by your team.
What mines are good for in BF2
The Engineer carries anti-tank mines. A community-maintained Battlefield Wiki reference describes them as pressure-triggered when a vehicle drives over them, and reports five mines at the start of a life and enough damage for one mine to destroy any land vehicle. Treat those figures as reported mechanics rather than an independently verified guarantee for every installation or server.

The practical value is that a mine can punish an enemy vehicle for taking a predictable path or make that path riskier. It works best when terrain, a ramp, or an approach to a control point funnels vehicles through a small area. GameSpot’s Battlefield 2 walkthrough gives a ramp leading to a defended Hotel control point as an example: it channels enemy vehicles while avoiding the friendly vehicle spawn below.

GameSpot warns that a mine at a friendly base entrance can prevent a friendly tank from leaving, and notes that teammates can see mines on their HUD. HUD visibility helps teammates notice them; it does not make blocking a useful route harmless.
Why pre-placing beats a last-second throw
Lay mines before a vehicle arrives. A GameFAQs PC strategy guide says it is difficult to drop a mine directly onto or in front of a moving vehicle, and recommends mining key roads instead. If you spot an incoming tank when it is already close, trying to place a mine in its path is a poor bet; use the time to take cover or support your team another way.

How friendly-mine behavior can vary
The GameFAQs guide reports that a patch changed friendly mine triggering so teammates could not set off their team’s mines. GameSpot’s advice nevertheless warns against mining friendly routes, because mines can still block movement even if they do not detonate under teammates. These sources do not establish the exact patch, mod, or server settings used in every match, so do not assume friendly-trigger behavior without checking the version and server you play on.

Mines fit the Engineer’s vehicle-support role when there is a useful route to prepare. The contemporary GameSpot walkthrough also characterizes the class as less capable in general ground combat than dedicated combat kits, so taking the Engineer solely to seek a quick mine kill may not suit every situation. Choose the kit when its broader vehicle-support utility and the chance to defend a route both matter.
