Animal Crossing: New Horizons’s free Ver. 3.0 update brings a hotel to decorate, separate dream islands for experimenting, and long-overdue crafting and storage improvements. Those additions are available in both versions of the game. Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds a distinct set of hardware-specific features, but you do not need it to play the new hotel or use the quality-of-life changes.
What’s new in Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0?
Nintendo’s Ver. 3.0 update adds new activities as well as practical improvements. The hotel and Slumber Islands extend the game’s design options, while batch crafting and home-storage access reduce friction in everyday play. Nintendo announced the update’s public launch for January 15, 2026; its US support version history labels Ver. 3.0.0 January 14, reflecting a one-day date difference between those Nintendo sources. The US support history lists Ver. 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026, as the latest patch checked here. Nintendo’s announcement and US version history distinguish the free update from Switch 2 Edition enhancements.
Kapp’n’s family hotel adds a new decorating loop
The hotel gives players themed guest rooms to decorate. Nintendo says decorating rooms—or completing certain DIY requests from Tom Nook—earns hotel tickets that can be spent at the souvenir shop. It is a fresh creative activity with a reward loop, rather than simply another place to arrange furniture. Nintendo’s feature overview describes the hotel and its ticket rewards.
Slumber Islands let you design away from your main island
Players can create up to three Slumber Islands, separate from their main island, and experiment with building and decorating using items they have obtained. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. That separation makes the feature useful for trying out ideas without reworking the island where your regular game is based. Nintendo’s feature overview sets out the island limit and membership condition.
#1 Best Overall
- Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
Everyday tasks take fewer steps
Ver. 3.0 lets players craft up to 10 items at once when they have enough materials, use items stored at home as DIY materials, expand home storage, and request a cleanup service from Resetti. These changes are less showy than a new design space, but they address repeated chores that can slow down returning players. The batch limit is Nintendo’s stated maximum, not a promise that every recipe can be crafted in a batch of 10. Nintendo’s US update history records the update’s features and later patches.
Which new feature is the best?
There is no official or measured ranking of these additions. My pick depends on what kind of play you want: the hotel is the strongest new structured design activity, Slumber Islands offer the most room to experiment separately from your home island, and the convenience changes are likely to have the broadest daily impact. Each solves a different problem, so the best addition is the one that fits how you play.

| Kapp’n’s family hotel | Themed-room decorating with souvenir rewards | Included in the free Ver. 3.0 update for both game versions; no Switch 2 hardware feature is needed. |
| Slumber Islands | Trying out island layouts and decoration separately | Included in Ver. 3.0; requires Nintendo Switch Online and uses items you have obtained. |
| Crafting, storage, and cleanup improvements | Reducing repeated chores during ordinary play | Included in Ver. 3.0 for both game versions; batch crafting is up to 10 items when materials allow. |

What is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
Nintendo lists improved resolution, mouse controls for decorating, Custom Designs and bulletin-board writing, and a megaphone that uses the system microphone as Switch 2 Edition features. Nintendo’s US announcement specifies 4K resolution in TV mode. Its detailed update article says online sessions can include up to 12 players when everyone has Switch 2 Edition. These are hardware-specific enhancements, not prerequisites for the hotel, Slumber Islands, or Ver. 3.0’s convenience changes. Nintendo’s US announcement and feature details describe the edition and online-play condition.
If you already own the Switch version, Nintendo offers a paid upgrade pack for the Switch 2 enhancements. Consider it only if those features matter to you and you have Switch 2 hardware; it is not needed to access the free Ver. 3.0 content. Check Nintendo’s current edition and upgrade information for availability and pricing, which can change.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Do you need Happy Home Paradise, amiibo, or LEGO items?
No. The Ver. 3.0 hotel is part of the free update; it is not gated behind Happy Home Paradise, amiibo, LEGO products, or the Switch 2 upgrade. Happy Home Paradise remains a separate paid design expansion that requires the base game. Subscription access is available only while an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is active. Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise page describes the expansion, and Nintendo Support explains Expansion Pack access.
Nintendo and LEGO crossover items are also part of the update. Selected Zelda and Splatoon amiibo can invite particular characters and unlock themed items, but compatibility depends on the specific amiibo and interaction. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information rather than assuming any amiibo works for every feature.
What has the latest patch changed?
Nintendo’s US version history lists Ver. 3.0.3 as released April 29, 2026. It made the 25th Anniversary leaf statue available through Nook Shopping and corrected an item-image issue. The same history lists Ver. 3.0.2 on April 13, 2026, and Ver. 3.0.1 on February 18, 2026. Those maintenance updates followed the larger January Ver. 3.0 content release; Nintendo’s public announcement dates that launch January 15, while the US version history lists Ver. 3.0.0 as January 14. Nintendo’s US version history has the patch details.
