Say goodbye before the group departs
Head toward the departure area and speak with Rosa, who is by the exit near the horses. The rescued nobles and Kuttenberg burghers are preparing to leave. Say goodbye to them; speak with Kunzlin Ruthard last, since that conversation triggers their departure.
Optional: speak with Janosh
Janosh is in the courtyard near the gate. The walkthroughs describe this conversation as optional; the wiki notes his somber mood.

Optional: join the courtyard toast
Dry Devil and his companions are gathered at a courtyard table. The group includes Katherine, Samuel, and Lord Pisek. PowerPyx reports that joining the “to the fallen” toast grants reputation; this is a guide-reported effect, not an independently verified result.
Erik’s challenge: accept or refuse?
After you speak with Rosa, a cutscene introduces Kubyenka and Erik’s challenge. You can initially talk with Kubyenka and still change your mind: the decision is made by speaking with Zizka or heading to the gate.
| Choice | What happens | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Accept | Henry commits to the optional duel with Erik. Afterward, the story moves toward the shared Suchdol sequence. | Players who want the extra duel scene and are willing to take on another fight. |
| Refuse | Follow Zizka toward the gate and bypass the fight. The quest proceeds to the next story sequence. | Players who prefer to avoid the combat, resource use, or a slower transition. |
The walkthrough sources do not establish a different long-term story branch or reward for either choice. PowerPyx calls the duel missable and recommends accepting for a more complete experience; the quest wiki presents it as optional. Whether the extra scene is worth the fight is a matter of preference, not a required progression choice.
If you accept: prepare for the Erik duel
The duel is optional, but if you choose it, PowerPyx recommends restoring Henry to full health and maintaining his weapon at the sharpening stone by the stables. The guide also reports that choosing “You’re a wretch (Provoke and Attack)” in dialogue lowers Erik’s stats. Treat that as a walkthrough tactic rather than a guaranteed result for every character or game state.
If you decide the fight is not worth continuing, PowerPyx says you can reload an earlier autosave and refuse the challenge. The perceived difficulty can vary with Henry’s build, equipment, difficulty setting, and your combat skill; the guides’ opinions about the fight are subjective.

Whether you duel Erik or refuse, the routes converge on the arrival of Markvart von Aulitz and the start of So it begins…. The Fandom walkthrough describes Markvart’s force appearing on the horizon, while PowerPyx frames the transition as the siege of Suchdol.
