Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a demanding, deliberate medieval RPG—not an easygoing power fantasy. Its slow start, hands-on systems and punishing mistakes will frustrate players who want quick competence. But for those who enjoy learning through practice and inhabiting a reactive world, those same demands can make it unusually absorbing. That is the sequel’s real promise: not perfection for everyone, but a near-ideal fit for the patient role-player.
What kind of RPG is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II?
Set in 15th-century Bohemia, the action RPG follows Henry of Skalitz through a story of revenge, betrayal and discovery. Its official PlayStation description emphasizes a grounded world and a role shaped by the player’s choices, skills and equipment.

Rather than treating medieval life as scenery between fights, the game builds its identity around inhabiting that setting. Blacksmithing, archery, customizable skills and gear, and first-person combat are among the systems highlighted in the official description. The result is a game that asks you to learn its world as well as its rules.
Is it worth playing if you want a realistic medieval RPG?
It is a strong match if “realistic” means a world that resists you, expects preparation and rewards attention. It is a weaker fit if you want rapid progression, frictionless travel or combat that feels intuitive from the first encounter.
#1 Best Overall
- Live life through the eyes and actions of Henry, a young man on a quest to avenge his murdered parents. His story – illustrated with over five hours of stunning cinematics – takes him from aspiring warrior to rebel, crossing paths with a charismatic cast of characters and an unforgettable set of adventures, as he goes up against the King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox and his fearsome allies.
- Your actions shape Henry’s destiny and how the world will react to him. Customize freely his appearance, skills and equipment while taking a moral stance on the events around you. Travel round the land engaging in unique activities, such as blacksmithing and archery, to truly immerse yourself in this vibrant region of Europe that will remember your actions, forever.
- This stunningly authentic rendition of 15th Century Bohemia allows you to experience this fascinating setting like never before. Get lost in a sprawling city, engage with peasants and talk with nobles while exploring a vast and rich countryside with taverns, bath houses, castles and more.
- Feel the clash of steel and visceral combat as you engage in thrilling real-time battles. There’s a range of authentic weapons and combat styles to suit every player. On foot, horse or by stealth, you can specialise in elegant sword mastery, brutal blunt weapons or deadly ranged attacks.
In his review for The Guardian, published February 5, 2025 and amended March 23 to correct the historical period, Tom Regan describes early hours that demand patience. He praises the writing, characters and humor, and finds the first-person duelling compelling, while also describing the game’s everyday systems as sources of friction. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every player will find the same balance rewarding.
Clothing, hygiene, wounds, food and potion-making all contribute to the sense that Henry exists in a physical world. Even fast travel can feel unsafe rather than like a clean skip between destinations. These systems can make routine progress feel slow, but they also give preparation and attention a role beyond simply choosing the strongest weapon.
How hard is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II?
Expect a learning curve rather than a smooth ramp into effortless competence. The game’s role-playing systems reward practice, and early failures are part of understanding how to handle its combat and other demands. If you enjoy improving through repetition, that resistance can make progress feel earned; if you would rather master a game quickly, it may feel like needless obstruction.

The game offers several approaches, including swordplay, blunt weapons, ranged attacks, stealth and dialogue. That variety gives you alternatives to meeting every problem with a blade, but it does not make the experience casual: each approach still asks you to engage with the game’s systems and make considered choices.
What makes its Bohemia feel grounded?
The world’s sense of place draws on research and interpretation, rather than a claim of perfect historical reconstruction. In a February 4, 2025 Xbox Wire interview, Warhorse senior game designer Ondřej Bittner describes using geographic data, 19th-century military maps, surviving castles and churches, and broader knowledge of the period where evidence for a particular building was unavailable.
That process helps explain why the landscape is more than a backdrop. Bittner says, “Most of the landscape of Bohemia – even in the 15th century – is quite inviting.” The interview offers insight into the developers’ methods, not an independent historical audit of the finished game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who will enjoy it—and who may bounce off?
- Likely to enjoy it: players who like long-form role-playing, exploration, systems to learn and a protagonist who does not begin as an expert.
- May struggle with it: players who want immediate mastery, little day-to-day friction or a fast-moving story with minimal interruptions.
- Worth considering: whether you prefer melee, stealth, ranged play or dialogue solutions, and whether you enjoy a world that asks you to prepare rather than simply move on.
The sequel’s resistance is inseparable from its appeal. The systems that make progress demanding can also make growing more capable feel meaningful. That is an editorial judgment based on the game’s official feature description and Regan’s review—not a universal verdict or a quantified comparison with another RPG.
