The engine is not the same thing as its playable scenarios and data: depending on the package you choose, you may need original Panzer General data or a separately supplied data package before you can play.
What is LGeneral?
LGeneral is an operational wargame engine whose design draws heavily on Panzer General. It supports turn-by-turn play in single scenarios and full campaigns, either against the computer or a human opponent. Its mechanics include entrenchment, rugged defense, defensive fire, surprise contacts, surrender, unit supply, weather effects and reinforcements. The official LGeneral project page describes the game and its available content.
The distinction between the engine and the playable data matters: downloading the engine alone does not necessarily give you scenarios to play. Choose a content path as well as an installation path.
Does LGeneral include Panzer General?
Not in every distribution. The project lists its source archive as engine and converter source code; it says that you need either the project-listed pg-data.tar.gz package or original DOS Panzer General data, with installation and conversion instructions in README.lgc-pg. The Debian README for LGeneral 1.4.4-2 likewise says the engine itself does not provide playable data and explains the conversion route. It describes the original data as copyrighted and uses the term “abandonware”; that is the README’s characterization, not a legal determination. Check the data package’s own README and the license and terms applicable to the material you use.

The project’s Windows 1.4.4 package is listed as including Panzer General and K.u.k data. Availability and compatibility can change, so confirm the current package details before relying on that inclusion.
Can you play LGeneral without original Panzer General data?
Yes, if you choose the standalone K.u.k General data package. The project describes it as a free set of World War I scenarios that does not require converting original Panzer General data. This is a separate content option, rather than evidence that the engine archive itself contains scenarios.

The project also lists campaigns and scenarios as unofficial add-ons that rely on original Panzer General data. If your goal is that content, follow the project’s instructions for obtaining and converting the required data rather than assuming the standalone WWI package is a substitute.
How do you install LGeneral?
The project lists several routes, but the right choice depends on your operating system and the scenarios you want. Its download page lists the 1.4.4 source archive, a Windows 1.4.4 package, Flathub and other ports or packages. Check the linked distribution listing for current availability and compatibility; the existence of a listing alone does not guarantee a working build for your system.

| Route | What the project lists | Data and setup considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Source | lgeneral-1.4.4.tar.gz, containing engine and converter source code |
Requires pg-data.tar.gz or original DOS Panzer General data for that content path; use README.lgc-pg for installation and conversion. |
| Windows | lgeneral-1.4.4-win32.zip |
The project says this package includes Panzer General and K.u.k data. Verify present-day availability and compatibility. |
| Flathub or other package/port | Links to Flathub and other distribution routes | Check each listing for its current build, supported platform and included data; the project page does not establish a current compatibility matrix. |
| Standalone K.u.k General data | A free WWI scenario package | Does not require conversion of original Panzer General data, but is data content rather than a replacement engine. |
The project page states that the game requires SDL 1.1.4 or later and that SDL Mixer is optional; it says the game can run without sound. The editor has separate requirements: SDL2, SDL2_ttf and SDL2_image. These are project-stated dependencies, not a guarantee that every packaged build requires you to install them manually.
What operating systems support LGeneral?
The project page lists a Windows package, source code and links to other distribution routes, including Flathub. SourceForge’s project listing identifies BSD, Linux and Windows as operating systems, but a listing does not confirm that a build is currently available or compatible with a particular system. Check the package or port for your operating system before installing.

Version records also differ by distributor. The official project page lists version 1.4.4 source and Windows downloads; FreshPorts lists 1.4.4_1 and records an update on 2025-08-14; SourceForge reports a project-listing update on 2026-06-06. Those dates describe different listings, not one universal latest version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is LGeneral free, and what license does it use?
The official project lists the K.u.k General data as free. For the software license, the Debian README calls LGeneral GNU GPL software, while FreshPorts labels its package GPLv2+ and SourceForge lists GPLv2. Consult the license included with the exact source archive or package you download, since these records use different wording.
