Some Japanese gaming coverage reports that players who find Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 difficult to read or pronounce have informally called it 「なんとか33」—roughly, “Something 33.” It is not an official Japanese title: Sega’s official reading is クレール・オブスキュール：エクスペディション サーティースリー.
What does 「なんとか33」 mean?
AUTOMATON reported the phrase 「なんとか33」 as an informal way some players refer to the game because its foreign-language title is hard to read. In this context, 「なんとか」 can stand in for a name someone cannot readily recall or pronounce, making “Something 33” a natural English gloss. AUTOMATON WEST uses that rendering and notes that some players shorten the name further to “33.”

What is the official Japanese reading?
Sega’s Japanese materials give the title as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and provide the katakana reading クレール・オブスキュール：エクスペディション サーティースリー. That reading is distinct from 「なんとか33」, which coverage presents as an informal shorthand, not a retitling. Sega’s announcement says the game launched worldwide on April 24, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Japanese platform listings are available from PlayStation Japan and Steam.

Why is the title hard to say?
The nickname report points to difficulty reading or pronouncing the foreign-language title; it does not establish that the phrase’s meaning or the game’s localization caused the nickname. There is a separate piece of context for the title itself: a Game*Spark interview report quotes Sandfall creative director Guillaume Broche explaining “Clair Obscur” as an art technique that uses strong contrast between light and dark to bring out volume and dramatic effect.
