A petition urging Ubisoft to cancel Assassin’s Creed Shadows was reported at almost 30,000 signatures on July 2, 2024. The FPS Review’s snapshot that day put the count at 30,181. Those are historical figures, not a current total. The petition’s author objected to the game’s portrayal of samurai and its treatment of Japanese history; Ubisoft later responded on July 23, 2024, describing the game as historical fiction and acknowledging concerns about some promotional materials.
What the petition said
The Change.org petition called on Ubisoft to cancel Assassin’s Creed Shadows. In wording reproduced by Insider Gaming, its author asked Ubisoft to “immediately cancel the release” and argued that the game showed insufficient research and respect for Japanese history and culture.
Those are the petition author’s objections, not an established historical finding or evidence of a consensus among Japanese people. Contemporary coverage also situated the dispute in debate about Yasuke’s portrayal and the game’s two-protagonist structure. The petition and that debate should not be treated as a single representative Japanese view.
How many signatures did it get?
Reports published July 2, 2024, described the petition as having almost 30,000 signatures. The FPS Review reported a specific count of 30,181 at publication. These are contemporaneous snapshots; neither establishes the petition’s present-day total.

What Ubisoft said in response
On July 23, 2024, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows development team described the game as “a compelling, historical fiction set in Feudal Japan,” rather than a factual reconstruction. The team said it had worked with external consultants, historians, researchers, and Ubisoft Japan.
Ubisoft also acknowledged that some promotional materials had caused concern within the Japanese community and apologized for that concern. Its statement said Yasuke is depicted as a samurai and recognized that portrayal is debated. It described Naoe, a Japanese shinobi, as an equally important protagonist.

Why some earlier reports say Ubisoft had not responded
A July 4, 2024, Times of India report said Ubisoft had not yet responded. That was an earlier snapshot: the company’s public development-team statement came on July 23. Later coverage, including TechRadar’s July 23 account, covered the response.
