July 2023 reports described leaked Starfield screenshots showing a rifle that resembles an AK-47. The reports do not establish that Bethesda officially names it an AK-47, or that Bethesda authenticated the images. The striking takeaway is visual: a familiar, conventional rifle design appears in a far-future space RPG.
What the leaked Starfield images reportedly show
On July 5, 2023, Insider Gaming reported that screenshots uploaded to Idle Sloth’s Discord showed what it called an AK-47 or AK variant. The article linked to an Imgur re-upload; that account does not establish who originally captured the images or independently verify their authenticity.

Starfield Db described a Reddit-posted screenshot as showing a player on Jemison aiming an AK-47-inspired weapon at a UC Security NPC. It also reported visible interface details, including a level-2 character and an O2-filter item. These are secondary descriptions of the image, not confirmation from Bethesda.
Is it officially called an AK-47?
That has not been established. ComicBook.com noted that Bethesda might give the weapon another in-game name. The safest description is “AK-like” or “AK-inspired”; “space AK” is informal shorthand, not verified official terminology.

ComicBook.com also reported that a similar-looking weapon had appeared in the June 2023 Starfield Direct. So the leaked images were not necessarily the first public glimpse of the design.
Why the rifle looks out of place—and fits the setting
Bethesda’s June 12, 2022 gameplay reveal places Starfield in 2330 and describes a role-playing game centered on exploration, weapons and space combat. It also says players can use resources from outposts to modify weapons. That context makes a recognizable rifle design an arresting contrast with the game’s distant-future setting, but it does not explain why the weapon exists in-universe or establish Bethesda’s design intent.

In that 2022 promotional description, Bethesda said the game spans over a hundred systems and over 1,000 planets open to visit. Those are Bethesda’s stated figures, not independently verified counts. The reveal also called the new universe “25 years in the making”—marketing language, not a measured development duration.

A June 2024 Bethesda update announced official Creations support and described ammunition research and crafting: players can research ammunition at a Research Station and craft it at an Industrial Workbench. This is official game information, but it does not authenticate the earlier screenshots or confirm the rifle’s name.
