Roblox scripting uses Luau, not stock Lua as an interchangeable label. Luau is derived from Lua 5.1, so many Lua lessons can help with programming fundamentals—but Roblox-specific APIs, Studio workflows, and Luau features require Roblox-focused learning.
What language does Roblox use?
Roblox uses Luau for scripting in Roblox Studio. Roblox describes Luau as derived from Lua 5.1, with performance enhancements and additional features such as optional typing, string interpolation, and generalized iteration for tables.
Roblox’s compatibility rule is: “All valid Lua 5.1 code is valid Luau code, but the opposite is not true.” In other words, Lua 5.1 code can be used in Luau, but code that uses Luau-specific features may not run in a Lua 5.1 environment. Roblox’s Luau documentation explains the differences.
Can Lua tutorials or books teach you Roblox scripting?
Yes, for general programming concepts. Roblox says most Lua books and online resources remain broadly applicable to Luau. They can help you understand variables, functions, conditionals, loops, and tables.

They are not a complete guide to making Roblox experiences. For Roblox Engine APIs, Studio script types, and Luau-only syntax, use Roblox’s documentation alongside general Lua material. A Lua programming book can be a useful supplement, but choose resources that clearly identify Lua version and explain where Luau differs.
Where should a beginner start?
If you have never programmed, Roblox recommends its Coding fundamentals series or the Basic gameplay tutorial. The coding series introduces core concepts through step-by-step lessons and game-making exercises.

Follow Coding fundamentals for a structured introduction
The series progresses through variables and objects; functions and events; conditionals; loops; dictionaries and arrays; and organizing code with ModuleScripts. It is designed for new programmers and connects syntax to Roblox projects.
Use Intro to coding if you are new to both coding and Studio
Roblox’s Intro to coding curriculum takes learners through a story-game sequence covering setup, variables, testing and saving, and customization. If you do not yet have a Roblox account, Studio installed and active on your device, or familiarity with Studio’s interface, start with the Studio lesson linked from that curriculum.
Rank #3
Try a small script after learning the Studio interface
Roblox’s introductory scripting tutorial builds a disappearing platform. It shows how to insert a Script under a Part, store the part in a variable, change properties, and use a function. This is a practical first exercise because it puts basic code in a visible game context.
Why learn inside Roblox Studio?
Studio’s Script Editor combines code editing with Roblox-specific assistance. It supports autocomplete, syntax highlighting, static linting, type checking, and script analysis; it can also display documentation and function signatures for Roblox Engine API members. These tools help you learn both Luau and how Roblox’s APIs are used.
Rank #4
Luau is dynamically typed by default, but you can add explicit types and use strict type checking. For learners, that means you can begin without declaring types everywhere and later use type information to catch mistakes and make code easier to understand. See Roblox’s Script Editor documentation.

Roblox recommends using local scope for most variables and functions. Its scope guidance says Luau accesses local variables and functions faster than globals. It also states that a global variable in a time-critical loop can make that loop perform more than 10% slower than using a local variable in the same loop. That is a specific comparison from Roblox’s documentation, not a universal benchmark for every script or workload.

A practical learning sequence
- Get comfortable with Studio. Learn where scripts go and how to run and test an experience; use Roblox’s Studio lesson first if its interface is unfamiliar.
- Learn core programming ideas. Work through Coding fundamentals or Intro to coding rather than trying to memorize syntax in isolation.
- Build a small feature. Follow the disappearing-platform tutorial and observe how a script changes an object in the game.
- Look up Roblox-specific behavior. When a Lua tutorial does not cover an Engine API or Luau feature, consult the Roblox Creator documentation.
- Use editor feedback as you practice. Pay attention to autocomplete, warnings, type checks, and API signatures instead of treating Studio as a plain text editor.
