First separate a game that looks choppy from a display that flickers, blanks out, or reports an unexpected resolution. Game performance and HDMI picture problems have different causes: PS5 output settings can change the signal sent to your screen, but cannot make a game render frames it does not support.
Check whether the problem is in the game or the display signal
Note the game, PS5 model, display model, and whether the symptom occurs in one title or several. If only one game stutters or drops frames, check that game’s graphics or performance options and install its available updates. A console output setting is not a guaranteed fix for a title-specific frame-rate problem.
If the image itself flickers, goes blank, or shows an unexpected resolution, focus first on the display and HDMI signal path. The steps for that problem differ from diagnosing choppy gameplay.
Review PS5 resolution, VRR, and 120 Hz settings
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the connected HDMI device information, resolution, VRR, and 120 Hz Output settings. With resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. For Sony’s guidance, see How to change PS5 console resolution.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
A 120 Hz output setting is not the same as a game rendering at 120 frames per second. The game and display both need to support the relevant feature; enabling it does not guarantee a higher frame rate in every title. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV. If VRR causes unexpected behavior, turn off Apply to Unsupported Games. If games cause video output problems on the display, Sony advises turning off 120 Hz Output.
If a 4K picture flickers, try setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 in Video Output. This limits the output signal and may improve picture quality, but it also removes some output modes, including 4K 120 Hz at either setting.

Check the HDMI and display connection
These checks are for flickering, blanking, or resolution and picture problems—not a proven cure for in-game frame drops.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, temporarily bypassing a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Confirm the display is set to the HDMI input used by the console and check for available display firmware updates.
- Try another HDMI port and, if available, another cable. Start with the cable included with the PS5. Sony recommends a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for high-performance features if you need to test or replace one.

Try system troubleshooting without treating it as an FPS guarantee
If problems affect multiple games or PS5 features, first check for a system software update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
If the problem remains, Sony lists Clear System Software Cache in Safe Mode for system feature issues or performance drops. To reach Safe Mode, turn off the console, then press and hold the power button again until you hear the second beep; connect the controller by USB and select the relevant option. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions.

Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a database of system content. Sony gives it narrower example uses, such as system feature issues or a deleted game icon remaining on Home; it is not a promised frame-rate fix. Safe Mode also includes options that erase user data. Restore Default Settings does not delete console content, but Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) do. Back up important data before using any data-erasing option.

If the symptom persists across games after checking game settings, system software, and the HDMI/display chain, use the official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic path. The symptom alone does not establish a particular hardware fault, so do not assume that replacing a component will resolve it.
