Yes. The Path of Pain is an optional, hidden challenge inside the White Palace—not a required route through the game. It offers an extra cutscene and a Hunter’s Journal entry, rather than a requirement for completing the main adventure.
How the Path of Pain fits into the White Palace
The White Palace is the larger area; the Path of Pain is a secret sub-area within it. Team Cherry describes the White Palace as “entirely optional” in its White Palace post. A community-maintained Path of Pain reference identifies the challenge as a hidden area. The developer’s statement applies to the White Palace as a whole, not specifically to the Path of Pain.
What you get for completing it
Finishing the challenge reveals a short cutscene depicting the Pale King with a younger Hollow Knight and awards the Seal of Binding Hunter’s Journal entry, according to the community-maintained reference. These are optional lore and journal rewards.
What the challenge involves
The Path of Pain is an extra-difficult platforming route involving aerial and wall movement through mobile hazards, spikes, and thorns. It ends with a fight against two Kingsmoulds. The reference places its entrance behind a breakable wall in the first buzz-saw room on the White Palace’s second floor, above the atrium.

Can you replay the Path of Pain?
No. After completion, the entrance wall cannot be broken again, so the area becomes inaccessible, according to the community-maintained reference. If you want to see its cutscene or earn its journal entry, complete it before leaving it behind.

You can skip the Path of Pain if you do not want its challenge or optional rewards.
