A later IIDEA snapshot, announced in 2025 and covering 2024, reports 2,800 employees at 200 Italian game companies. The counts use different terms—developer studios in the earlier source and companies in the later one—so they show change over time without establishing a directly comparable series.
What did the 1,600-person and 160-studio figures measure?
The European Games Developer Federation’s 2020 data lists 1,600 people working in Italy’s video-game industry and 160 video-game developer studios. Those are 2020 figures, not a present-day headcount. European Games Developer Federation
A 2022 Italian Trade Agency presentation cited IIDEA’s 2021 census using slightly different wording: more than 160 development studios and more than 1,600 employees. The presentation date and census year are different, and the “more than” phrasing should not be collapsed into the exact counts in the federation’s 2020 table. Italian Trade Agency
What is the later count for Italy’s game industry?
IIDEA’s announcement of its 2024 annual report, published April 15, 2025, says Italy had 200 game companies and 2,800 employees in 2024. It estimates those companies’ turnover at €180–200 million, up 36% compared with 2022. The source calls the entities “companies”; it does not establish that this count uses the same definition as the earlier developer-studio totals. IIDEA

Is Italy’s video-game industry growing?
The reported counts point to growth: IIDEA’s 2025 announcement gives 2,400 employees in 2022 and 2,800 in 2024, alongside a 36% rise in turnover. However, the announcement’s headline describes employee growth as 17%, while its body says 19%. The raw counts imply about 16.7%, which rounds to 17%; the body’s percentage does not match those counts. Treat the employee totals as the reported figures and the percentage discrepancy as unresolved in the announcement.
IIDEA General Manager Thalita Malagò said the report showed that “video games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment for Italians, with an industry that continues to grow and innovate even at the national level.” IIDEA’s announcement, April 15, 2025

IIDEA describes its 2024 annual report as covering market, consumer and national-industry data. Its publication index also lists a 2025 report, but the index listing does not provide the later industry counts. Therefore, 2,800 employees and 200 companies are the figures reported for 2024 in the cited 2025 announcement; they should not be presented as a confirmed 2025 headcount or necessarily as the latest available counts.
