What happened to Story Mode?
The original JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle had a Story Mode and campaign; All-Star Battle R removes them. In a publisher interview, producer Kentaro Matano put the change plainly: “Other major changes are the modes, as we added All-Star Battle mode, Team Battle Mode, and Tournament modes in lieu of the original story mode and campaign from the original release.” Bandai Namco’s interview with Matano identifies him as the game’s producer.
That means R is not the original campaign with a new title or presentation. The replacement modes provide ways to fight, not the original campaign structure or narrative progression.
What is All-Star Battle Mode?
All-Star Battle Mode brings back clashes from the earlier game and adds battles unique to R, according to Bandai Namco’s official game page. It is the mode most likely to resemble a sequence of curated matchups, but the official description does not promise a story campaign. Expect battle content rather than the original Story Mode’s campaign format.

What changed in combat?
R revises the fighting system rather than simply carrying the original battles over unchanged. Matano names these additions and adjustments:
- Assist attacks: bring another character into a fight to help with an attack.
- Dash jumps: add a new movement option.
- Stylish Guard: adds a defensive mechanic.
- Hit stop and technique behavior: both were adjusted, though the interview does not provide a complete technical change log.
Bandai Namco’s official game description also calls out a faster fighting tempo and new combos. Together, these are the broad, officially described changes—not an exhaustive account of every balance adjustment.

Which modes are available?
Official sources group and label the modes somewhat differently, so their lists should not be treated as one definitive menu taxonomy. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch listing names All-Star Battle Mode, Arcade Mode, Online Mode, Versus Mode, Practice Mode, and Gallery Mode. Matano’s interview separately names Team Battle and Tournament modes as additions replacing the campaign. Bandai Namco Europe describes Versus Mode as supporting 1v1 or 3v3 matches in its official game information.
Practice and input options
Practice Mode offers adjustable computer actions and difficulty, configurable gauges, and visual feedback such as damage and input displays, according to Nintendo’s Switch listing. A fighting stick is optional: Matano says the game supports console controllers, PC keyboards, and fighting sticks, and that a stick is not required.

Release and multiplayer details
Bandai Namco announced the global launch for September 2, 2022, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Matano said cross-platform multiplayer is not supported. Cross-generation multiplayer is supported within the PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series families, according to the producer interview.

Bandai Namco Games reported on September 8, 2015, that the original All-Star Battle, released in 2013, had passed 500,000 units sold. That is a historical milestone for the original game—not a current sales total for it or for All-Star Battle R. Bandai Namco Games’ September 2015 corporate release records the figure.
