The paid expansion adds a continuation of the game’s cinematic Story mode and Kombat Pack 2; Animalities returned in an update available to all Mortal Kombat 1 owners, not just expansion buyers.
What does Khaos Reigns include?
Warner Bros. Games describes Khaos Reigns as an expansion to Mortal Kombat 1 and the next phase of its story. It also includes Kombat Pack 2, a set of six playable fighters. The story expansion and fighter pack are paid content; Animalities are separate from those purchases. Warner Bros. Games’ launch announcement and the official Khaos Reigns FAQ describe the contents.

The story expansion
The expansion continues the game’s cinematic Story mode. The official FAQ identifies it as an addition to the main game, not a standalone title.
Kombat Pack 2 fighters
The pack includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, T-1000 and Conan the Barbarian. Availability was staggered: Cyrax, Sektor and Noob Saibot were listed as available at launch, while the guest fighters—Ghostface, T-1000 and Conan—were announced for one-week early access, with their post-launch timing to be announced. The launch roster was therefore not all six fighters.

Animalities
Animalities returned as finishing moves in an update available to all Mortal Kombat 1 owners. Buying Khaos Reigns is not required to access them, according to the publisher’s announcement.
Do you need Mortal Kombat 1 to play Khaos Reigns?
Yes. The expansion requires the Mortal Kombat 1 base game. The official FAQ describes it as an expansion to the main game, and Steam’s listing explicitly says the base game is required on that platform.
