Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord expansion War Sails adds naval combat, fleet management and the Nords—but Steam’s English user reviews were Mixed overall and Mostly Negative recently when checked on October 8, 2026. That is a snapshot of player sentiment on one storefront, not a critic consensus or a permanent verdict.

What is War Sails?

War Sails is TaleWorlds Entertainment’s paid naval expansion for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. It launched on November 26, 2025, alongside the free base-game patch v1.3.4, according to the official release announcement. An earlier planned date of June 17, 2025 was delayed; TaleWorlds subsequently shifted its target to early fall before confirming the November launch.

The expansion requires the base game on Steam. Its announced launch platforms were PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG. TaleWorlds listed a launch price of $24.99 USD / €24.99 on October 30, 2025; that is a historical launch price, not a current quote, and prices vary by storefront and region. What do the mixed reviews mean?

When checked on October 8, 2026, Steam showed English-language user reviews as Mixed: 54% positive from 2,509 reviews. The recent-review label was Mostly Negative, with 36% positive from 63 recent reviews. Both labels and counts can change as users post reviews; they describe Steam user sentiment, not critics’ ratings or reviews across every platform. Steam user reviews

Why are players criticizing War Sails?

A PC Gamer report published August 16, 2026 described the expansion as controversial and summarized complaints appearing in negative user reviews. Those included bugs and other technical problems, difficulty getting the expansion running, and a perception that naval systems sit at the edge of a conventional campaign rather than reshaping it. The report also discussed concerns that changes associated with naval navigation and combat affected mod compatibility. These are reported criticisms, not evidence that every player encounters the same problems or that every mod is affected. PC Gamer’s report

The same report said TaleWorlds had released War Sails modding tools and announced a modding contest. That provides context for the modding discussion, but does not establish the status or compatibility of any particular mod.

What does War Sails add to Bannerlord?

TaleWorlds presents War Sails as a major single-player expansion that brings sea travel and combat into the campaign. Its Steam description lists these additions:

  • Naval battles: Board enemy ships, ram them or attack at range, with wind and water physics affecting combat.
  • Ships and fleets: Customize, capture or build ships through shipyards. Steam lists 22 unique vessels, spanning warships, trade ships and a fishing vessel.
  • The Nords and northern territory: A new faction and region of islands, coastlines, open seas and fjords.
  • Naval campaign activity: Blockades, raids on coastal villages, amphibious battle scenes, and changes to trade and diplomacy.
  • New character content: Maritime skills, Nord companions and troops, additional equipment and an introductory questline.

These are the developer’s advertised features; they describe the expansion’s scope, not how prominently every system figures in a typical campaign. War Sails on Steam

Is War Sails worth it?

Whether it suits you depends on how much you want naval warfare and fleet management in Bannerlord. The expansion is a more natural fit for someone keen to fight at sea, explore the northern region and use its new faction than for someone looking only for a conventional land-campaign update.

  • Consider it if: ship battles, fleet progression, coastal raids and the Nord content are the features you want from Bannerlord.
  • Take more care if: you rely on mods or are wary of the technical and compatibility complaints summarized by PC Gamer. Check current Steam reviews and the status of the specific mods you use before buying.
  • Check before checkout: confirm that you own the required base game and compare the current price in your region on your preferred storefront.

The October 2026 Steam snapshot offers a reason to inspect recent player feedback, but it cannot establish whether the issues described will affect your setup or whether the expansion’s naval systems will suit your preferred campaign style.
