What do reviews say about Monster Hunter: World?
Review scores are strongly positive, though they measure different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable. Metacritic lists a critic score of 90/100 from 93 reviews and a user score of 7.8/10 from 2,719 ratings, accessed in 2026. Steam lists 92% positive from 116,053 English-language reviews overall and 90% positive from 1,401 reviews in the 30 days before its 2026 retrieval. Steam figures are live platform ratings; they are not a direct comparison with critic scores. Metacritic · Steam
The praise focuses on the scale and variety of the hunts, the depth of weapons and equipment, and the satisfaction of preparation paying off. The Games Machine’s Metacritic excerpt highlights the challenge and appeal of playing with friends. Polygon’s excerpt notes that the complexity of weapon skills and rare gear can reward players without making the game inaccessible to newcomers. Eurogamer Italy emphasizes the preparation-and-hunt structure and lengthy progression. The range is not unanimous: a low-scoring critic excerpt on Metacritic criticizes the game. GameSpot’s review page gives it 8/10 and classifies it as an action/role-playing game. Metacritic · GameSpot
What makes the hunts satisfying—and demanding?
Each quest is part of a larger gear-building cycle: prepare, track and fight a large monster, collect materials, then craft weapons and armor for tougher targets. Official PlayStation materials describe tools such as traps and lures, using the environment to your advantage, and monsters interacting with one another. The appeal is not simply defeating a target; it is learning how that encounter works and improving your approach. PlayStation
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome to the new world: taking on the role of a Hunter, players are tasked with going on a research expedition to a newly discovered continent known only as “new world”.
- Living and breathing ecosystem: utilize the surrounding environment and wildlife to your advantage;Subgenre:Action role-playing game (RPG)
- Online drop-in multiplayer: when the battle is too daunting to take on single-handedly, hail up to three other hunters to assist during quests by sending up a sos flare to a worldwide server.
- Hunt to craft new Gear: defeat monsters and collect loot from fallen foes to craft equipment and weapons styled after the monsters that have been slain.
- SEAMLESS gameplay: players and monsters can move from One map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.
Combat rewards learning
Weapons have distinct systems to master, and a monster-specific plan can matter as much as raw equipment strength. That complexity gives the game room to grow with the player, but it also means the early hours involve learning controls, weapon behavior, and preparation rather than immediately feeling effortless.
Progression requires time
Better gear comes from materials earned through hunts, so the loop asks players to revisit hunts and gather what they need. For players who enjoy refining tactics and building toward a stronger loadout, repetition is part of the reward. If you prefer a brisk campaign with little backtracking or resource gathering, that same structure is the clearest reason to pass.

- Battle fearsome monsters not only to craft new weapons & armor, but also to drive the story forward and uncover the mysteries of the New World and Hoarfrost Reach
- Extensive single-player campaign that also allows drop-in multiplayer; use the SOS Flare to summon other hunters for an assist!
- Use monster materials, as well as items found growing in the wild, to craft new items and gear
Is Monster Hunter: World good for beginners?
It can be a good entry point for newcomers to the series, but “beginner-friendly” does not mean simple or instantly mastered. Polygon’s review excerpt, preserved by Metacritic, specifically argues that the game’s complexity should not intimidate new players. Expect to learn the weapon you choose, prepare for each hunt, and accept a substantial progression commitment. A newcomer who likes practicing a combat system is more likely to enjoy that process than someone seeking an easy action game with little preparation.
Should you play solo or with friends?
Both are supported. Official PlayStation materials describe solo play and online drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to four players total, including the host. Playing with friends can make the hunts especially appealing, as reflected in review praise, but official product information does not establish current matchmaking population or service quality. Do you need Iceborne?
No. Iceborne is an expansion for players who want more of World, not a prerequisite for deciding whether the base game suits them. It continues the adventure in the frozen Hoarfrost Reach, adds Master Rank above High Rank, and expands combat with new weapon combos and the Clutch Claw mechanic. Capcom also lists an Iceborne Master Edition bundle that includes the base game. If you already own World, check the product contents carefully so you buy the expansion rather than a duplicate base-game bundle. Monster Hunter: World – Iceborne · Capcom product details
