Spoilers: The Secret Box is a mandatory three-stage puzzle in Hinako’s old classroom at Ebisugaoka Middle School. Pick up the Unopened Envelope beside the box before interacting with it.
Secret Box solutions by difficulty
Match the clue on each envelope page by revealing the corresponding symbols on the box. Rotate it and inspect both sides: the target symbols may be split across them. The required number of symbols changes with your selected puzzle difficulty.
| Difficulty | Stage 1: sweet fruits | Stage 2: journals and books | Stage 3: sakura | Active box sections |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Cherry and strawberry on opposite sides | All three book icons: two on one side and one on the other | One cherry-blossom branch | Eight interactive white sections |
| Hard | Apple, cherry, and cut orange on one side; strawberry, pineapple, and grapes on the other | All four book icons: three on one side and one on the other | Two leafy sakura branches on one side and the cherry-blossom tree on the other | Twelve brown slats |
| Lost in the Fog | Cherry, strawberry, berries, and pineapple on one side; cut orange and apple on the other. Do not count tomatoes or eggplants. | All five book icons: four on one side and one on the other | Four cherry-blossom icons. Focus on blossoming branches, not trees or potted plants. | All twenty slats |
These are the target symbols to expose, not a reliable button-by-button input sequence. The Secret Box Puzzle Guide notes that its Hard-mode fruit answer was corrected; use the apple, cherry, cut orange, strawberry, pineapple, and grapes combination shown above.
How to complete the classroom puzzle
- Enter the only accessible classroom on the school’s second floor and pick up the Unopened Envelope beside the box.
- Read the first clue, then turn the box to expose the matching sweet-fruit symbols on the required side or sides.
- After the first stage reveals another envelope page, match its journal-and-book clue by exposing every book icon required for your difficulty.
- Use the final page’s sakura clue to expose the required blossoms. Check the opposite side before finishing each stage.
As you complete stages, the envelope reveals the next clue. The clue themes stay the same across difficulties; only the target symbols and counts change. The middle-school walkthrough also describes the category and count differences.

What the Secret Box unlocks
Completing the third stage awards the Second Floor Generic Classroom Key, which lets Hinako leave the locked classroom and reach more of the second floor. This is separate from the later locker-code puzzle: the middle-school route eventually requires the Key Cabinet Key in Asakura Ayumi’s locker. Its code is 534 on Story, 865 on Hard, and 399 on Lost in the Fog, as detailed in the Ebisugaoka Middle School walkthrough.
