Marvel’s Midnight Suns: How to Complete Every Hero Challenge

To unlock the Midnight Sun Challenges, research Forged in Hellfire, build the Armory, complete Hunter’s challenge, then reach Friendship Level 5 with each other eligible hero. Hulk has a separate research unlock. Below are documented card-by-card solutions for all 13 original heroes and the four DLC heroes. These are walkthrough routes, not the only possible solutions. The Chu’s Steam Community guide, updated May 24, 2023, is the source for the sequences; check them against your current game build if a patch or edition behaves differently.

How to unlock the challenges

Challenges are solo card puzzles launched from the Forge. They use a fixed hand, Offense stat and card draw order, and may limit mechanics such as Redraw or Move. Most require you to defeat particular enemies or objects to obtain a legendary ability, then use it to complete the puzzle.

1. Complete the research project Forged in Hellfire. It requires Forge level 4 and four missions completed with Ghost Rider; Story and General missions count.
2. Build the Armory upgrade for 175 Credits. It adds the Challenges option to the Forge menu and makes Hunter’s challenge available.
3. Complete Hunter’s challenge before attempting the other original-roster heroes’ challenges.
4. Reach Friendship Level 5 with each other original-roster hero, except Hulk, who has no Friendship mechanic.
5. For Hulk, research Change of Plans (Forge level 15 and three missions with Hulk), then Energy Drink (Forge level 15 and three upgraded Hulk abilities). The Steam walkthrough says the F.O.R.C.E. War Room upgrade is not required, but Change of Plans must be researched.

Original roster challenges

Hunter — Child of Darkness

Puzzle: Knock an enemy into the crystal to obtain Bladestorm, then use Bladestorm on the Black Crystal.

1. Use Charge cards to reposition a Whisper without killing it.
2. Defeat the card-holding Whispers by knocking them into the fallen pillars. Collect the additional Charges and Whip they leave behind.
3. Use Whip to knock the surviving Whisper into the crystal and obtain Bladestorm.
4. Play Bladestorm on the newly spawned Black Crystal.

Blade — Bare Fangs

Puzzle: Build Bleed on the Incarnation, use Reaper to finish it, then destroy the Black Crystal with Glaive.

1. Use Quick Strike+ on the Whisper holding Make ’em Bleed, then use Relentless to defeat it and collect Make ’em Bleed.
2. Play Make ’em Bleed. Use Strike on the remaining Whisper and the Incarnation to apply Bleed, then hit the Incarnation with all four Daywalker chain attacks to stack more Bleed.
3. Use the other Quick Strike+ to defeat the remaining Whisper and obtain Reaper.
4. Use Reaper on the Incarnation to consume its Bleed and defeat it; collect Glaive.
5. Use Glaive on the Black Crystal.

Captain America — Guardian

Puzzle: Collect Shield Charge and use it on the Black Crystal.

1. Punch the Whisper holding The Best Defense into the columns, then play The Best Defense.
2. Use Shield Bounce on the three Whispers nearest the Incarnation, leaving the Shield Bash holder alive.
3. Punch that last Whisper into the columns to obtain Shield Bash.
4. Play Tactician for Block and two cards. Use both Shield Bashes on the Incarnation, then Punch it into the wall to obtain Shield Charge.
5. Use Shield Charge on the Black Crystal.

The guide’s worked example reaches 62 Block before the Shield Bash sequence.

Captain Marvel — Hero’s Heart

Puzzle: Obtain Supernova, then use it on the Black Crystal.

1. Use Cosmic Ray and Quick Jab on the Whisper, then Knee Strike to obtain Go Binary.
2. Enter Binary Mode. Use Fists of Radiance to knock the Whisper into the crystal and collect All In.
3. Use One Step Ahead to draw Regroup and another Fists of Radiance.
4. Play Regroup to raise Block, then use All In.
5. Use Fists of Radiance and Rain of Blows on the crystal to obtain Supernova. The guide notes that the crystal’s knockback immunity does not prevent the required damage.
6. Use Supernova on the Black Crystal.

Doctor Strange — Strange Memories

Puzzle: Build up Bolt of Balthakk, obtain Seven Suns of Cinnibus from the crystal, then use it on the Black Crystal.

1. Use Bolt of Balthakk to defeat a Whisper holding Blessing of the Vishanti, then play the Blessing.
2. Defeat a Whisper holding Agamotto’s Gaze. Play the Gaze to draw the remaining Bolts.
3. Use those Bolts to defeat the other Whispers holding Agamotto’s Gaze and Blessing of the Vishanti, collecting the cards they hold.
4. Use Agamotto’s Gaze again and play the stronger Blessing.
5. Defeat the Incarnation with the strongest Bolt to obtain Resonance. Use Resonance to create two more Bolts; this route produces four Bolts at 22 damage each.
6. Use all four Bolts on the crystal to gain Seven Suns of Cinnibus, then play it on the Black Crystal.

Ghost Rider — Dark Heart

Puzzle: Group the Whispers, use Penance Stare on the Incarnation.

1. Lash the left Whisper into the central Whisper, then Lash the far Whisper into the same cluster.
2. Use Judgment to defeat the grouped enemies.
3. Use Retribution on the final rightmost Whisper, knocking it into the fallen pillars to obtain Penance Stare.
4. Use Penance Stare on the Incarnation.

Hulk — Monster or Man?

Puzzle: Build Rage and use Worldbreaker to defeat the remaining Whispers.

1. Use Gamma Kick on the lone right Whisper and knock it into the wall. Use the second Gamma Kick on the Whisper holding Rampage and knock it into another Whisper.
2. Play Smash, then use Crush on the Rampage holder to obtain Rampage.
3. Chain Rampage across the three grouped Whispers.
4. Use Let’s Do This to make the four Taunted enemies attack Hulk and generate Rage.
5. Smash a remaining Whisper to reach five Rage and obtain Worldbreaker.
6. Use Worldbreaker to defeat the remaining Whispers.

Iron Man — Iron Will

Puzzle: Use two Surgical Strikes to destroy the crystal and obtain Hellfire Beam.

1. Recharge New Plan to draw Leave It to Me.
2. Use Heads Up for Heroism, then Precision so the next card is not discarded.
3. Use Leave It to Me twice to draw more cards, including two Surgical Strikes.
4. Use the first Surgical Strike with all eight chain hits on the crystal.
5. Use Heads Up for Heroism, then the second Surgical Strike with all six chain hits.
6. Use three Blasts on the crystal to destroy it and obtain Hellfire Beam.
7. Use Hellfire Beam on the Black Crystal.

Do not spend a card to build extra Heroism before the two Surgical Strikes: the guide warns that doing so reduces their chain count and leaves the crystal alive.

Magik — Demon Child

Puzzle: Use Darkchylde after setting up the Leyline and obstacle collisions. Magik must survive the enemy attacks.

1. Play Limbo’s Grasp, then place Limbo Portal on the green Leyline.
2. Use Quick Soulslash to send the Incarnation holding Darkchylde through the portal into the Leyline, applying Vulnerable.
3. Use Trap Door to move that target in front of the red Leyline, then Kick it into the Leyline.
4. Use the second Trap Door to set up a collision. Soul Blast the target into an obstacle to defeat it and obtain Darkchylde.
5. Play Darkchylde and survive the enemy attacks.

Nico Minoru — Black Shadows

Puzzle: Copy Witchstorm and Witchfire, then use Crack in the Sky to finish.

1. Redraw Blood Magic to get another Double Up for Attack cards.
2. Use one Double Up to copy Witchstorm and the other to copy Witchfire.
3. Redraw Empower if needed, then use Blood Magic to Strengthen Nico.
4. Use Witchstorm on the outermost Whisper on each side. This reduces the number of possible targets and brings the Whispers to the required health.
5. Use each Witchfire to clear enemies and obtain Crack in the Sky.
6. Play Crack in the Sky.

Scarlet Witch — Witch’s Trial

Puzzle: Use Hex Field and Hex Bolt to obtain No More, then play it.

1. Use Quick Toss+ on each distant Whisper to pull both into Scarlet Witch’s radius.
2. Use both Hex Fields.
3. Hex Bolt the most damaged Whisper holding another Hex Bolt, then use the gained Hex Bolt to defeat the next card-holding Whisper.
4. With the last Hex Bolt, chain two hits on the healthier Whisper and one on the weaker Whisper to obtain No More.
5. Use No More to complete the challenge.

Spider-Man — Wall Crawler

Puzzle: Use the Sliders and wall collisions to obtain Infernal Spider, then finish the Black Crystal. The Steam guide says the challenge-screen objective is inaccurate: its walkthrough requires defeating all enemies.

1. Use Opportunist for two Moves and two free environment attacks.
2. Use Special Delivery+ to knock the rightmost Whisper into the Incarnation.
3. Move Spider-Man behind the nearer Slider and line up the Incarnation with a Whisper. Use the Slider to knock the Incarnation into that Whisper.
4. Repeat with the left Slider and another Whisper, then use the final Slider to knock the Incarnation into the short wall and obtain Infernal Spider.
5. Use Infernal Spider, then Up Here! and both Chain Strikes on the Black Crystal.

Wolverine — Bone & Claw

Puzzle: Use taunts and wall collisions to obtain Midnight Special, then play it.

1. Use Lethal Pounce with a full combo on a nearby Whisper to gain Strengthen.
2. Chain Swipes across the closer Whispers to Taunt them. Use Stink of Fear to Taunt the other two and position them for wall collisions.
3. Use Power Slash to send each of those Whispers into a short wall, applying Vulnerable.
4. Use Let’s Do This to finish the two recently attacked enemies.
5. Use Eviscerate on the remaining two, with two chain hits apiece, to obtain Midnight Special.
6. Use Midnight Special to complete the challenge.

DLC hero challenges

Deadpool, Morbius, Storm and Venom are add-on characters with their own DLC packs, as listed on PlayStation’s US game and DLC page. Their challenges are separate from the original 13.

Deadpool — Fourth Wall

Puzzle: Clear the Whispers in sequence to obtain Burning Sensation, then use it on the Incarnation.

1. Use Spread the Love across the two card-holding Whispers.
2. Use Death from Above on the survivor, then Pain Pinata across the three rightmost Whispers.
3. Use Spread the Love across the far-left and far-right Whispers.
4. Use Death from Above on the right Whisper, then Mag Dump on the final Whisper to obtain Burning Sensation.
5. Use Burning Sensation on the Incarnation.

Morbius — Late Night Snack

Puzzle: Apply Bleed, use Undying Fury on the Incarnation, then clear the remaining enemies.

1. Quick Claw the weakest Whisper holding Claw, then play Mist Form.
2. Claw the right Whisper holding Shadow Strike, play Blood Lust, then use Shadow Strike to apply Bleed to the three remaining Whispers.
3. Claw the left Whisper holding another Shadow Strike. Use Shadow Strike with two hits on the Whisper holding Feeding Frenzy.
4. Claw that Whisper, then use Feeding Frenzy on the last one.
5. Claw the Incarnation to apply Bleed, then use Undying Fury to defeat it.

Storm — Make It Rain

Puzzle: Use Vortex to knock the final two Whispers into their Leylines and obtain Hellstorm. Storm must not be downed; follow the Frenzy timing.

1. Use Gale Force on the front Whisper holding Vortex to knock it into the back-left Whisper holding Goddess’ Blessing, defeating the latter.
2. Play Goddess’ Blessing, then Live Wire on the Whisper about to use Frenzy.
3. Use the Arc cards to defeat the remaining nearby Whispers while managing Frenzy attacks.
4. Use Vortex to knock the final two Whispers into their Leylines and obtain Hellstorm.
5. Use Hellstorm on the Dark Crystal.

Venom — Brain Buffet

Puzzle: Use Insatiable Hunger and Tasty Brains to gain Assimilation, then clear the remaining Whispers.

1. Use Lethal Embrace on the Incarnation holding Tasty Brains.
2. Use Tendril Strike on the two right Incarnations, then use the other Tendril Strike with a full combo on the Tasty Brains holder.
3. Use Web Toss to send the left Incarnation into a Leyline so it damages the others without defeating them prematurely.
4. Use Spike Burst on the injured Incarnations to obtain Insatiable Hunger and Tasty Brains.
5. Play Insatiable Hunger, then use Tasty Brains on the last Incarnation to gain Assimilation.
6. Use Assimilation and the resulting Tasty Brains/Lethal Embrace sequence to clear the remaining Whispers.

What completing a challenge gives you

Completing a hero’s challenge awards that hero’s Midnight Sun legendary suit and legendary heroic card. Replaying a completed challenge does not award another copy; the Steam walkthrough says additional copies can be crafted at the Forge or obtained through Gamma Coils.
