Mojang said in March 2025 that it had no plans for a direct sequel to the main Minecraft game or to make Minecraft free-to-play. Those were comments from interviews reported by GameSpot, not a promise that the studio’s plans can never change.
Is Minecraft 2 coming out?
As reported by GameSpot on March 24, 2025, Minecraft executive producer Ingela Garneij answered a question about a straight-up sequel by saying: “Do you think we’re going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there’s no Minecraft 2.” The comment was made in an interview with IGN and reported by GameSpot; it was not an official announcement that a sequel could never be made.
Garneij and game director Agnes Larsson described their focus as continuing to develop the existing game. Garneij said they set strategy for what Minecraft could do going forward. That points to ongoing development of the original sandbox rather than a numbered replacement. GameSpot’s March 24, 2025 report has the interview details.
Does Minecraft Dungeons II count as Minecraft 2?
No. Minecraft Dungeons II is a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons, a separate action-RPG. It is not a sequel to the main open-world Minecraft game. Mojang’s official About Dungeons II page distinguishes Dungeons’ action-RPG format from Minecraft’s open-world building and exploration.

Is Minecraft going free-to-play?
In a separate interview reported on March 24, 2025, Garneij and Larsson said Mojang had no current plans to switch Minecraft to a free-to-play model. Garneij said the model “doesn’t really work with the way we built it.” She also described the game as a purchase, with additional content such as DLC available separately. In other words, the reported position concerned the game’s business model; it did not mean every add-on or update is included in the initial purchase. GameSpot’s report on the free-to-play question includes the comments.
Why did Mojang say no?
The 2025 interviews, as reported by GameSpot, emphasize the studio’s intention to keep developing Minecraft and its view that free-to-play does not fit how the game was built. An earlier comment offers historical context, but should not be mistaken for the reason given in those interviews: in 2016, Mojang technical lead Jens Bergensten told TIME he worried a sequel could push players toward competing creative block-building games. That is an older opinion, not a fresh explanation of Mojang’s 2025 position. TIME’s 2016 interview records his comments.

Could Mojang’s plans change?
Yes. The reported statements describe Mojang’s position in March 2025, not a permanent guarantee about every future year. Minecraft Live remains an official channel for news; its page lists a Fall 2026 event on September 26. The event listing itself does not establish a change to the sequel or pricing positions.
