Why were reviews mostly negative?
Launch-era review excerpts repeatedly criticized execution: bugs and performance problems, awkward AI, familiar combat, and missions that did not make enough use of the open-world setting. Critics also questioned the depth of the story and gameplay. These are recurring themes in selected review excerpts, not a systematic count of every review.
Technical stability and polish
Several launch-period excerpts described bugs, frame-rate issues, or a lack of polish. The available review evidence does not establish current performance across platforms, and it should not be read as a measured frame-rate comparison.

Combat, missions, and the open world
Critics often found the combat conventional and the mission design restrictive. A related complaint was that the open-world framing did not consistently translate into meaningful freedom or exploration.
Story, atmosphere, and presentation
Some excerpts criticized a thin story or gameplay, while others recognized atmosphere, visual presentation, or moments of enjoyable action. The negative reception was not unanimous, but those positives did not outweigh the more common complaints in the PC aggregate snapshot.

Did later updates change the picture?
Launch reviews do not describe every later version of the game. In a February 4, 2026 report, PC Gamer reported that Build A Rocket Boy said a major post-launch update was live. The report listed patch-note changes addressing navigation markers, mission fairness, drone controls, animation, and bugs.
The same report covered planned expansion content, enhanced exploration, and multiplayer. Those were announced plans in the February 2026 report; the report alone does not establish whether they were subsequently released or how much they changed the current experience. The studio described the update as achieving its vision for quality, while CEO Mark Gerhard said the team would continue refining performance and improving combat and gameplay. These are the studio’s claims and intentions, not independent confirmation of the results.
