In Vault Hunters 3rd Edition, vault modifiers change what happens during a run: some protect you, while others affect experience, loot, resources, or encounters. The official Vault Hunters wiki’s modifier overview was last edited July 18, 2025; the figures below follow that reference and are not confirmed as unchanged in the live build on October 8, 2026. Check the current in-game tooltip or documentation before planning around patch-sensitive values.

What vault modifiers do

Modifiers are effects associated with a vault run. Some appear when you enter the Vault Portal and last for the vault; other modifier systems involve items or choices you apply before a run, altar tasks, or special vault types. Their source matters: an entry effect is not the same as a player-selected catalyst or a gear affix.

The official overview lists nine default entry modifiers. Their published values are game mechanics reported by the Vault Hunters Official Wiki, not results from an independent statistical study.

Default entry modifiers

Modifier Published effect What it means for a run
Beginners Grace Keep inventory on death, with a durability penalty Death is less costly for carried items, but equipment still takes a durability hit.
Beginners Insurance Chests cannot be trapped Removes the trapped-chest risk.
Enlighted +100% Vault Experience Focuses the run on vault XP.
Hoard +50% Item Quantity Raises item quantity.
Treasure +100% Item Rarity Raises item rarity.
Soul Surge +100% Soul Shard drop rate Focuses the run on Soul Shards.
Prosperous Guarantees an Artifact on vault completion The Artifact reward is conditional on completing the vault.
Prismatic +25% Catalyst Fragments Boosts Catalyst Fragment gains.
Champion’s Abode +10% chance for Champions to spawn Changes the chance of a Champion encounter.

These effects are listed on the official Vault Modifiers overview, last edited July 18, 2025. The modifiers do different jobs: Beginners Grace and Beginners Insurance address run risk, while the others target rewards, progression, or encounter odds. The published values do not establish which modifier is best for every player or objective.

How catalysts modify a vault

Catalysts are a player-controlled way to enhance a vault rock for a single vault. According to the official Catalysts reference, fragments can be found in Wooden Chests in unmodified vaults, and an Infused Catalyst can be crafted at the Catalyst Table. The listed examples show several different targets:

Catalyst Published effect Focus
Wooden Adds 25% toward Wooden Chests Chest type
Gilded Adds 25% toward Gilded Chests Chest type
Ornate Adds 25% toward Ornate Chests Chest type
Living Adds 25% toward Living Chests Chest type
Wealthy Adds 25% toward Coin piles Currency
Plentiful Adds 20% toward Vault Ores Mining resources
Soul Boost Adds 25% Soul Shard drop rate Soul Shards
Extended Adds one minute to the vault timer Time
Accustomed Adds 20% vault XP Experience

Bonus catalysts add a random set of the specified chest or coin pile type. These examples and values are from the wiki reference; verify the relevant tooltip in your build before committing a catalyst.

Vault God modifiers and altar tasks

God-linked effects come from Vault God altars and reputation rather than the default entry list. The official Vault Gods reference describes four specialties: Idona for combat, Tenos for loot, Velara for defense, and Wendarr for utility. At level 40, God Altars start appearing in rooms. Completing their tasks grants reputation and a modifier associated with the god; reputation is capped at 50.

God Specialty and example effects listed
Idona Combat; examples include bonuses to damage and soul chance.
Tenos Loot; examples include bonuses to rarity, quantity, and mana.
Velara Defense; examples include bonuses to health, healing, armor, and effect avoidance.
Wendarr Utility; examples include fruit effectiveness, effect duration, cooldown reduction, and movement speed.

Task types listed on the page include killing particular enemy types, opening specified chest types, and mining vault ores. The reference also names temporary effects such as Loot Goblin, Rock Solid, and Glued Mobs. Task counts and effect details can be patch-sensitive, so use the current altar and in-game descriptions for the values in your version.

Capstones: one consequential pre-run choice

A capstone is applied to a crystal before it becomes unmodifiable. The official Capstones reference lists three options:

  • Peaceful: prevents mobs from spawning.
  • Avarice: prevents trapped chests.
  • Pylon: highlights pylons.

Because the crystal becomes unmodifiable after applying a capstone, choose with the intended run in mind rather than treating it as a reversible setting.

Special vault contexts: Ascension and other paths

The overview also points to Temporal Shards, Braziers, Ascension Vaults, Cake Hunt, Pylons, and Vault Companions as related modifier paths or systems. It does not consolidate every detail for those systems into one list, so they should not be mistaken for additional entries in the default modifier table.

Ascension Vaults are a distinct context. The official Ascension Vault reference says they are entered with Challenger Rocks; objectives become harder as runs continue while completion rewards increase. Its listed objective types are Elixir and Scavenger Hunt.

Vault modifiers are not gear modifiers

Equipment has its own modification system. The separate Armour and Weapon Modifications reference covers equipment attributes and rolls such as durability, armor, damage, healing effectiveness, and cooldown reduction. Those modify gear, not the vault run. That wiki page is categorized as 3rd Edition and was last edited October 14, 2025.

How to choose or interpret a modifier

Start by identifying where the effect comes from, then match it to the run’s purpose. Entry modifiers are presented on portal entry; catalysts let you target chest types, resources, Soul Shards, time, or XP for one vault; God effects are connected to altar tasks and reputation; and capstones are a crystal choice with an immutability constraint. For any listed value that affects your plan, confirm the current in-game description, since the cited pages document a 2025 reference rather than verified live 2026 values.
