Minecraft’s Poisonous Potato update is a real April Fools snapshot, not a standard release: Mojang published it on April 1, 2024. To try it, check the Minecraft Launcher’s Java Edition snapshots; Mojang’s original instructions say to enable snapshots in the Installations tab, then install and select the snapshot. Availability today has not been confirmed, so first see whether the named snapshot, 24w14potato, is still listed for you.
What is the Poisonous Potato update?
It is Minecraft: Java Edition snapshot 24w14potato, released by Mojang Studios on April 1, 2024, as an April Fools joke. It is not a normal current-release update. The joke turns the usually unwanted poisonous potato into the centerpiece of an absurd potato-themed adventure.
Mojang’s official feature list describes a journey “from its inception as a raw potato picked from the fields, through cooked hash browns, to its eventual decay.” That is promotional joke copy, not a player review or a promise that the snapshot remains downloadable.
How to try the Java snapshot
Mojang’s April 1, 2024 instructions are for Java Edition. Because the article is historical and current launcher availability is unconfirmed, check for 24w14potato before relying on these steps.

Mojang also said players could use the snapshot on Java Realms with friends. Its article warns: “Snapshots can corrupt your world, so please back up your world and/or run the snapshot in a different folder from your main worlds.” Back up any world you care about, or keep the snapshot isolated from your usual saves.
Java snapshot versus Bedrock add-on
The Java snapshot and the Bedrock option are separate paths, not two names for the same update. Mojang’s article points Bedrock players to Jigarbov’s Poisonous Potato add-on, but does not establish feature parity with the Java snapshot or confirm the add-on’s present availability.

| Option | Edition | Route described by Mojang | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24w14potato | Java Edition | Enable snapshots in the Launcher’s Installations tab, then install and select it if listed. | A joke snapshot. Current availability is not confirmed. |
| Jigarbov’s Poisonous Potato add-on | Bedrock Edition | Mojang’s article points to the add-on; check its destination for current access and instructions. | A separate add-on described as including blocks, furniture, weapons, and armor. Feature parity with the Java snapshot is not established. |
What the joke update adds
The official list imagines a potato-centered dimension and several ways to explore, fight, and interact with it.
- Poisonous Potato Dimension: the snapshot’s central setting.
- Five named biomes: fields, hash, arboretum, corruption, and wasteland.
- A Colosseum: an arena among the dimension’s attractions.
- Potato-themed content: blocks, items, gadgets, and mobs.
- Crafting and utility changes: a frying table and new fletching-table functionality for toxic resin.
The article’s “technical changes” section uses intentionally nonsensical technobabble; it is part of the April Fools joke, not evidence of a real technical improvement.

What poisonous potatoes do in ordinary Minecraft
The joke builds on an existing item. In a 2024 Taking Inventory article, Minecraft says harvesting a potato plant has a 1-in-20 chance of yielding a poisonous potato in addition to the regular harvest, and eating one has a 3-in-5 chance of poisoning the player. Those are background odds for ordinary Minecraft, not special mechanics or drop rates for snapshot 24w14potato. The same article says ordinary poisonous potatoes cannot be planted or baked and are not recommended as food.

No. Mojang’s FAQ asks, “WHAT HAPPENS IF I DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE?” and answers, “Then you will be the proud owner of the file that contains the update.” That is comic copy, not download or installation guidance. For actual play, use the Launcher steps above if the snapshot is available to you.
