Mojang added it to the retail game in the October 2024 Bedrock 1.21.40 “Bundles of Bravery” update. It is a one-life Survival mode: difficulty is locked to its highest setting, and after death you can spectate but cannot return to ordinary play, interact, or rebuild. Choose carefully—Mojang says Hardcore cannot be turned off once the world is created.
What the old “Now Testing” headline means
Mojang first announced Hardcore for Bedrock Preview and Beta testing, saying it would stay in Preview until the experience was ready for retail. That testing status is historical: the official Preview announcement described the original test, and Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.40 changelog, published October 22, 2024, introduced Hardcore to Bedrock Edition.

Mojang’s updates timeline retrospectively lists Hardcore in the October 2024 Bundles of Bravery release and says it is playable on Realms. A later Minecraft 26.30 Bedrock Changelog, posted June 16, 2026, refers to a Hardcore heart and border in the Realms Hub Slots interface. That confirms a later Realms interface reference, but does not establish a complete current availability matrix for every device, version, or Preview/Beta build.
What happens in a Hardcore world
Death ends ordinary play
Hardcore gives you one life. There is no normal respawn after death. Instead, you can explore and watch the world as a spectator, but you cannot interact with it or rebuild. If you want to keep playing in that world, the mode does not provide a way to resume ordinary Survival after you die.

Difficulty is locked
Hardcore is a Survival subcategory with the highest difficulty setting locked. This is not a setting you can lower later to make the world safer.
The choice is permanent for that world
Mojang’s launch notes state that Hardcore cannot be turned off after world creation. Decide before making the world whether you accept both the one-life rule and locked difficulty.

Before you create a world
- Be comfortable losing normal control after death. Spectating is not a substitute for respawning: you cannot interact or rebuild.
- Plan for the highest difficulty. You cannot switch to an easier difficulty in that Hardcore world.
- Back up the world regularly. Mojang recommended regular backups in its October 2024 launch notes. The recommendation is especially relevant when a single death changes what you can do in the world.
The official sources cited here establish the rules and release history, but do not provide a current, device-by-device set of menu steps for enabling Hardcore. Check the world-creation options in the version and platform you use rather than relying on a universal click path.

In October 2024, Mojang’s launch changelog warned of some smaller bugs and called out two multiplayer issues: one associated with low internet speeds and another involving replacing a Creative-mode Realm with a Hardcore world. Those were launch-period caveats; the notes do not establish that the issues remain unresolved today. The changelog also reported “over 140 bugs” fixed across the Bedrock 1.21.40 release as a whole, not 140 Hardcore-specific fixes.
