That does not mean every mod is incompatible or will be permanently broken: support depends on the mod, its maintainer, the game version, and the graphics backend you run.
Why Minecraft Java Edition is switching to Vulkan
Mojang says OpenGL has served Java Edition’s cross-platform needs, but it has stopped receiving updates and is being deprecated on macOS. The move to Vulkan is part of modernizing the renderer, supporting future Vibrant Visuals work, and keeping the game playable across operating systems, including macOS and Linux. Mojang describes performance gains as a possibility, not a guarantee for every computer; the official announcement provides no general benchmark showing a particular FPS increase. Mojang’s announcement says OpenGL and Vulkan would be available side by side during testing, with OpenGL removed only after Vulkan is considered stable and performant and players receive advance notice.
Will Vulkan break Minecraft mods?
Some mods may be affected, but Mojang has not said that all mods will stop working. The clearest risk is for mods that directly use OpenGL to render graphics. Mojang specifically warns that moving those mods to Vulkan may take more work than updating them for an ordinary Minecraft release. It recommends that mod authors reduce direct OpenGL use and reuse Minecraft’s internal rendering APIs where possible.
Mods that do not perform rendering through OpenGL are not identified by Mojang as the specifically exposed category. That is not a compatibility guarantee: a mod can have other dependencies, and its support still needs to be confirmed for the exact game version, loader, and backend.

There is no official mod-by-mod Vulkan compatibility list or migration timetable. For shaders, custom renderers, distant-rendering mods, and other graphics-heavy additions, check the maintainer’s current release notes and support channels rather than assuming compatibility from the mod’s name or an older release.
What the Vulkan setting does in each documented build
The default has changed between test builds, so “Vulkan is the default” needs a version attached to it. Mojang’s 26.2 notes describe Vulkan as experimental; the later 26.4 Snapshot 1 notes, posted September 22, 2026, say Default behaves like Prefer Vulkan. The snapshot notes do not establish what a later retail release does.

| Build | Graphics API behavior stated by Mojang | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 26.2 | Vulkan is experimental. The Graphics API setting offers Default, Prefer Vulkan (Experimental), and Prefer OpenGL. Older hardware or drivers can fall back to OpenGL. | The notes list Vulkan 1.2 with dynamic rendering and push descriptors as the requirement at that time, and say it may change. 26.2 release notes |
| Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 1, posted September 22, 2026 | Vulkan became the default graphics API in this snapshot; Default behaves the same as Prefer Vulkan. | The game no longer changes the graphics API setting automatically when a startup crash is detected. This is snapshot behavior, not confirmation of a later retail release. 26.4 Snapshot 1 notes |
Mojang’s earlier announcement anticipated keeping both backends available during testing. The setting and fallback behavior documented for a particular build are more useful than assuming that the same options or automatic recovery behavior apply to every version.
How to check your mods before switching
- Identify your exact game build. Note whether you are using a retail release or a snapshot; do not use a snapshot result as proof of retail compatibility.
- Check the mod and loader release notes. Look for explicit support for your Minecraft version and graphics backend. Ask the mod maintainer or loader community if the notes do not say.
- Pay particular attention to graphics mods. Shaders, renderers, and distant-rendering tools are worth checking closely because the relevant question is whether they directly use OpenGL or depend on code that does.
- Test in a separate installation or profile. Change one relevant variable at a time, and keep a copy of worlds and configuration files before testing. If a world fails to render or the game crashes, remove or update the suspected mod and retest before loading a valuable save.
- Use the graphics API option available in your build. In 26.2, Mojang documents Default, Prefer Vulkan (Experimental), and Prefer OpenGL. Do not assume a later snapshot or retail build has identical options or automatic fallback behavior.
Minecraft Support does not officially support modding and says it cannot assist with problems arising from mod use. For mod-related failures, the practical support route is the mod author or relevant mod-loader community. Minecraft Help’s modding guidance explains this support boundary.

Does your graphics card support Vulkan?
Requirements depend on the version and can change during the transition. Mojang’s 26.2 notes gave a Vulkan 1.2 requirement with dynamic rendering and push descriptors. Its system requirements page now states a minimum target of a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM. Do not treat the older 26.2 threshold as a timeless guarantee or assume that meeting a GPU requirement alone ensures smooth play or mod compatibility.
Mojang’s system requirements page lists these targets:

- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
| Target | Graphics target | Other stated requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings; Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM | 64-bit system; 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics; four-core processor |
| Recommended | 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings; graphics card with 6 GB VRAM | 16 GB RAM; modern processor |
These are Mojang’s stated targets, not proof that a specific player needs to buy a new graphics card. Check your operating system, GPU and driver support, game version, and the current Java Edition system requirements before making a hardware decision. Mojang says machines below the minimum may still launch today, but does not guarantee their performance or visual quality and warns that they may fail to launch in the future as Java Edition transitions away from OpenGL.

Vulkan testing has included platform-specific problems. For example, Mojang’s 26.3 Snapshot 2 notes listed a pink-screen problem with world rendering on Mac when using Vulkan. That is a historical issue reported for that snapshot, not evidence that it remains unfixed in later builds. Check the notes for the build you actually use. 26.3 Snapshot 2 notes

There is no established universal answer to whether Vulkan will improve performance on an individual PC, whether a particular mod will work, or when an unsupported mod will be updated. Those outcomes depend on the hardware and driver, the game build and selected backend, and the mod’s implementation and maintenance.
