Java Edition is the choice for Windows, macOS, and Linux players who want community mods and Java servers. Bedrock Edition is the choice for players on consoles, mobile devices, or PC who want to play together across supported Bedrock platforms. The editions do not join each other’s ordinary worlds, servers, or Realms. If you play on PC, Minecraft’s official store lists a product that includes both editions.
Which edition works on your device?
Start with the device you use. Java Edition is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is available across Windows, consoles, and mobile devices; check Minecraft’s official platform information for the current supported-device list.
For a PC purchase, Minecraft’s official Java & Bedrock PC product listing includes both editions. Regional product details may vary, so confirm the listing for your location before buying.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No—not in the ordinary way. Players need to use the same edition as the hosted game: Java players join Java games, and Bedrock players join Bedrock games. Java multiplayer works across Windows, macOS, and Linux; Bedrock supports cross-play among its supported platforms.

Account settings or parental permissions can affect access.
How do mods, add-ons, and Marketplace content differ?
Java: community-made mods and custom servers
Java has an open community ecosystem of third-party mods and custom servers. That flexibility gives players many ways to alter or extend the game, but content comes from outside Minecraft’s curated Marketplace. Choose third-party downloads carefully.

Bedrock: Marketplace content and add-ons
Bedrock offers curated content through the Minecraft Marketplace, including maps, skins, and mini-games. Marketplace purchases use Minecoins, as described in Minecraft’s parents’ guide. Add-ons are another Bedrock customization option.
What about controllers, touch controls, and split-screen?
Minecraft’s edition comparison describes controller and touch support for Bedrock, as well as split-screen on consoles. Those built-in options are not listed for Java in that comparison. If you want to play on a console or use touch controls, Bedrock is the relevant edition.

Are Realms shared between editions?
No. Realms are edition-specific. Minecraft’s Realms page describes Bedrock Realms as available on consoles, mobile, and Windows computers, with cross-play for other Bedrock players. Java Realms support Windows, Linux, and macOS. Choose the Realm edition that matches the game edition your group uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do updates differ, and are snapshots safe?
Both editions receive major updates. Java snapshots are development versions released for testing upcoming changes, not a risk-free substitute for the regular game. Minecraft’s edition comparison warns that snapshots may corrupt worlds; make a backup before opening a world in one.
