If you know your current password, use Microsoft’s change-password flow; if you’ve forgotten it, reset it through account recovery. To use a different email without losing the account, add it as an alias to the same Microsoft account.
Change your Minecraft password
Minecraft sign-in uses a Microsoft account, so password changes are handled by Microsoft. Minecraft directs players who need updated sign-in details to Microsoft’s account resources (Minecraft sign-in help).
If you know your current password
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com with the Microsoft account linked to Minecraft.
- Open Security, choose Change password, then enter and save the new password. See Microsoft’s change-password instructions.
If you forgot your password
- At the Microsoft sign-in page, select Forgot password.
- Choose an available method to verify your identity and receive a code.
- Enter the code and follow the prompts to set a new password.
If none of the recovery options shown is accessible or recognizable, use Microsoft’s forgotten-password recovery guidance and Sign-in Helper. This recovery process is different from changing a password when you can still sign in.
Change the email on your Minecraft account without losing it
Microsoft calls email addresses associated with a personal Microsoft account aliases. Aliases belong to the same account and share its password, contacts, storage, subscriptions, and settings. Adding an address as an alias lets you use it with the existing account; it does not create a separate Minecraft account (Microsoft alias guidance).

- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns your Minecraft purchase.
- Open the account’s email or alias management page and add the new address. Microsoft explains the process in its instructions for adding an email address.
- Verify the new address by following the on-screen prompts.
- Review which address is set as primary and which addresses are allowed for sign-in before removing an old one. The live interface and available options may change.
If your only goal is to receive verification codes at a different address, you may instead add or change a security verification method. Microsoft’s available methods vary by account and can include email, an authenticator app, or a passkey; see Microsoft account security info and verification codes.
Make sure you keep the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft
Changing an alias on the same Microsoft account is not the same as creating or signing into a different account. Before switching accounts, confirm which one owns the game: check the purchase confirmation email or the Microsoft account’s order history. Signing in with another account can make Minecraft appear unowned (Minecraft sign-in troubleshooting).

The old Mojang-to-Microsoft migration route ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft says it no longer assists with migration-related queries. Its migration information also notes that a new account joining a multiplayer world can appear as a new player, and that prior Java capes and skins are not recoverable. This is a separate issue from adding an email alias to your existing Microsoft account.

A password or email change updates your Microsoft account; it does not necessarily refresh a Minecraft session that is already signed in. Sign out of Minecraft and sign back in with the updated credentials. The steps differ by Launcher, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, so follow the instructions for your platform in Minecraft’s sign-out guide.
