Mine buried Netherrack in the Nether around Y=15, then collect any ancient debris with a diamond or netherite pickaxe. You can also try bed mining—beds explode in the Nether—or search bastion-remnant chests, which brings its own hazards. Minecraft’s official guidance recommends going in prepared for blast damage and hostile mobs.
Where ancient debris generates
Ancient debris is a rare block buried in Netherrack, rather than one exposed to the Nether’s atmosphere. Minecraft’s March 2021 article describes two possible generation bands per chunk: Y=8–22 and Y=8–119. It says level 15 has the highest average chance of finding some; that is a useful target, not a guarantee at a particular coordinate. Minecraft’s generation notes are from 2021, not a version-by-version test of current Java and Bedrock gameplay.

Minecraft’s December 2022 tutorial suggests bed mining at Y=11, 12, or 15. Its advice does not establish that bed mining or looting is universally faster than conventional mining in every current edition. Read the official bed-mining tutorial for its illustrated method.
Prepare before mining
- Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe: Minecraft says one of these is required to collect ancient debris. A weaker pickaxe will not do the job. Minecraft’s block guide states this requirement.
- If using beds, go in with full health, food, and diamond armor, and place a solid block between you and the bed before activating it. The official tutorial specifically warns that beds explode in the Nether.
- For ordinary mining, dig protected tunnels through buried Netherrack rather than expecting to spot debris exposed to the open Nether.
- If choosing a bastion, account for hostile mobs; chest looting is an alternative, not a risk-free shortcut.
Turn debris into Netherite progress
Ancient debris is part of the Netherite progression path. The Nether Update article explains that regular beds are unsafe in the Nether because they explode; that warning applies whether you are mining debris or traveling for another reason. Minecraft’s Nether Update overview provides that context. The cited practical guidance was published between 2021 and 2022, so exact mechanics should not be treated as newly verified for every current game version.
