Use Spider Eyes to attract them and, in Java Edition 1.20.5, to breed adults or speed up a baby’s growth. Collect armadillo scutes with a Brush or wait for them to drop as the animals walk. If one curls into its shell, give it space: it cannot eat or be tempted while rolled up.
Where do armadillos spawn in Minecraft?
Armadillos spawn in Savannas and Badlands in both Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.80. These biome locations are confirmed in the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes and the Bedrock Edition 1.20.80 changelog.
Those release notes do not specify a current spawn rate, group size, light level, or more precise biome conditions. If you are searching, explore the named biomes rather than relying on an unverified spawn formula.
What do armadillos eat?
Armadillos are tempted by Spider Eyes. Hold one to draw an unrolled armadillo toward you. A curled-up armadillo will not eat or be tempted, so wait for it to relax before offering food. Spider Eyes are also the food used for breeding.

How do you breed armadillos?
In Java Edition 1.20.5, feed Spider Eyes to two adult armadillos to make them breed. The Java release notes describe this behavior, along with feeding babies to speed up their growth: Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.5.
- Find two adult armadillos and let them unroll if either is curled up.
- Hold a Spider Eye and use it on each adult.
- After they breed, feed a baby Spider Eyes if you want to speed up its growth.
The cited release notes do not give a breeding cooldown or the amount of time feeding removes from a baby’s growth, so there is no reliable exact timer to give here. The Java note documents the breeding and baby-growth details; the cited Bedrock changelog does not specify them.

How do you get armadillo scutes?
Scutes are available in two ways: use a Brush on an armadillo, or wait for scutes to drop periodically as it walks. Minecraft’s official “Shy friends and armored paws” article describes the walking drops as random. A dispenser can also brush scutes off an armadillo, according to the release notes for Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.80.
The cited official sources do not state a drop interval or guaranteed amount, so a precise collection timer or farm yield cannot be established from them.

Why does my armadillo keep rolling up?
An armadillo curls into its shell when it detects certain threats. The Java 1.20.5 notes and Bedrock 1.20.80 changelog list these triggers:
- A player who is sprinting.
- A player riding a mount or vehicle.
- Undead mobs.
- A mob or player that recently attacked it.
In those versions, it unrolls after four seconds without detecting threats. It also does not roll up while fleeing, in water, in the air, or while on a lead or leash. Its shell reduces damage and can fully resist weak attacks. Spiders and cave spiders flee from armadillos only when the armadillos are not rolled up. See the official Java 1.20.5 release notes and Bedrock 1.20.80 changelog for these version-specific behaviors.

No. Minecraft’s official “Shy friends and armored paws” article says armadillos cannot be tamed; approaching one carefully does not make it a pet. They are still useful because their scutes are used to craft wolf armor.

What are armadillo scutes used for?
Scutes are used to craft Wolf Armor. The Java Edition 1.20.5 notes say the armor can be dyed, protects a tamed adult wolf from most damage until its durability is exhausted, and can be repaired with scutes while equipped. The Bedrock Edition 1.20.80 changelog also documents repairing it with scutes on an anvil. These details are tied to the cited editions and versions: Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.80.
