How do I download a skin from The Skindex?
- Browse the community skins on The Skindex and open the page for the skin you want.
- Select the page’s Download button to save the skin image to your device. The Skindex also offers an in-browser editor if you want to customize a skin.
- Keep the downloaded image as a PNG file so you can select it in the Minecraft Launcher.
The Skindex editor describes itself as unaffiliated: “This is not an official Minecraft product and is not endorsed or affiliated with Mojang Studios.”
How do I change my Minecraft Java skin?
Minecraft’s official guide, published June 5, 2023, describes the Launcher workflow below. The exact labels can change; if your interface differs, consult Minecraft’s current Java skin help. These steps are for Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition’s character creator.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Choose the Skins tab.
- Select New Skin (or the equivalent option to add a skin), then give the skin a name.
- Choose the model that matches the skin file: Classic/Wide or Slim.
- Browse to the downloaded or created PNG skin file and select it.
- Save the skin, then choose Save and Use to equip it.
Minecraft describes a skin as a pixel image wrapped around the player character. The official guide says Java Edition is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux through minecraft.net.

Which skin model should I choose: Classic/Wide or Slim?
| Launcher model | Arm width | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Classic/Wide | Four pixels wide | The skin was made for the standard Steve-style arm shape. |
| Slim | Three pixels wide | The skin was made for the narrower Alex-style arm shape. |
The model selection should match the PNG’s intended arm shape. Selecting the other model can make the arms appear wrong because the skin image and character model do not line up as intended.
Should I download a skin or make my own?
- Download an existing skin if you want a ready-made design. The Skindex provides community skin pages with downloadable files.
- Edit in a browser if you want to adjust a design without starting with a local image editor; The Skindex offers an online skin editor.
- Create a skin from scratch if you want full control. Minecraft’s guide says this requires an image editor, but it does not require a particular paid program.
If you upload art to The Skindex, its terms require that you created it or have permission to share it. The terms also prohibit offering or accepting payment for creating, customizing, or sharing skins on the site. Users retain ownership of their content while granting the site a broad license to use it in connection with providing and promoting its services; see The Skindex’s current terms for the full wording. The site says moderation does not mean it endorses or guarantees user submissions.
Why does my skin look wrong after uploading?
Start by checking the arm model. A four-pixel Classic/Wide skin should use Classic/Wide, while a three-pixel Slim skin should use Slim. Also confirm that you selected the intended PNG in the Launcher and completed the save-and-use step. Minecraft’s instructions call for a flat, unwrapped PNG skin image; they do not establish every possible cause of a display problem.

Mojang addressed a Java skin PNG metadata incident in an update dated April 18, 2018. It said the game did not run or read code stored in PNG metadata and that its upload service was changed to strip non-image metadata; Mojang marked that issue resolved. This is historical context about that incident, not a guarantee about every third-party download or the site’s current security.
